The people of Opuoma community in Ohaji Egbema local government area of Imo State, have written to oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Limited (SPDC), over the refusal of the firm to pay royalties to the community for 55 years, as well as pipeline rent and other benefits for 25 years. This is as they have called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to pay compensation to them for their properties destroyed to give way for the commission’s reclamation and shore protection project in the community. In a letter addressed to the managing director of SPDC, Mr. Mutiu Sumonu, the community said since the oil firm established its presence in the community in 1959, where it operates Well-22, it had not paid royalties to the host community.
