In a bid to ensure food sufficiency and reduce hunger in the country, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the National Schools Agricultural Programme (NSAP). Speaking at a press briefing at the nation’s capital, The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Schools Agricultural Programme, Alhaja Baraka Sani said the NSAP was introduced to create an avenue for acquisition of skills and entrepreneurship culture among students from early age. In Alhaja Sani’s words, “There are presently many challenges in the agricultural sector, however if young people are offered practical education in Agriculture and are engaged with innovation, the agricultural sector can attract youths, as we look forward to feeding our population of over 250 million by 2050”. She said her Office had been mandated by the Presidency to implement a comprehensive agricultural programme that would introduce young students to the various opportunities available in agriculture, by promoting skills for life and further contribute to the drive for economic diversification. In the pilot phase, a Students Agricultural Club would be established in selected schools from 12 states of the federation, two from each geo-political zone, with each club comprising 120 members. “The multiplier effect of this programme in the respective households will definitely play a great role in poverty eradication; help with nutrition and at the same time create jobs, especially in the rural areas. |
