Nigeria: A Nation of Hungry People grin

This is a clarion call to invest more in agriculture Nigeria is among the countries in the world faced with a high level of hunger threat despite its efforts at reducing hunger in the last 24 years, says the latest Global Hunger Index. In the GHI survey released last week, the country's index is 14.7 compared to Ghana's 7.8. grin grin grin According to the report, the higher the index score, the higher the hunger level. Nigeria's level is considered "serious". This year's report, focusing on "hidden hunger" was compiled by the International Food Policy Research Institute.
It is instructive that in 2010, out of 118 countries that were ranked, Nigeria finished 20th, on the index, an indication of the seriousness of food scarcity in the country. In response to the threat that year, the National Assembly expressed concern over desert encroachment in some Northern States, capable of aggravating the already worsening food crisis in the land. But beyond mere lamentation, there were no legislative initiative nor did the executive move beyond the self-adulation at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to address the challenge. It is therefore not difficult to understand how a nation so blessed with arable land and abundant oil wealth cannot feed its people.
It is highly disturbing that since that poor ranking about four years ago, Nigeria has consistently been featured on the negative side of the different human development reports in the world. These reports indicate that life expectancy in Nigeria is nothing to crow about; real income of most families has woefully reduced; unemployment is scandalously high; Nigeria is topping the list of countries with malnourished children and that the quality of health and education services in the country has deteriorated considerably.
Paradoxically, successive governments in Nigeria have always initiated projects that promote agriculture even though most have failed to yield the maximum results due to corruption, structural weaknesses, mismanagement, undue politicisation, etc. For example, the second National Economic Plan (1970-74) of General Yakubu Gowon made agriculture a priority, but the results did not match the efforts. Between 1975 and 1979, General Olusegun Obasanjo as then military Head of State, initiated a gargantuan agricultural scheme popularly called Operation Feed the Nation (OFN). The scheme also failed to tackle the country's food crisis.
Upon coming to power as the first Nigerian democratically-elected President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari introduced the Green Revolution Programme with a view to increasing domestic food production and curtail the increasing food import bills. That programme also failed calamitously especially from the scandals surrounding the importation of rice. The military regimes of Generals Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar and the late Sani Abacha made little or no efforts to boost food production in the country while the civilian administrations of Obasanjo, the late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua merely paid lip service to agriculture.
Now that our oil is drying out, the greatest challenge of the President Goodluck Jonathan government is to scale up concrete and systematic initiatives to boost food production in Nigeria. The government must invest heavily in agriculture. If neighbouring countries are producing enough to feed their citizens, why can't Nigeria do so with all her natural endowments? The answer is that basic food production must not fall prey to power politics. Government and banks should develop schemes to provide credit facilities to farmers to invest in mechanised agriculture. Massive rural-urban drift decimating the rural farm workforce should be tackled by making the rural areas attractive for young rural job seekers.
The point has repeatedly been made that a country as richly-endowed as Nigeria should not be suffering from the scourge of food scarcity. Human development is the epicentre of all developments. It is a shame that whilst Nigeria is beating her chest in euphoria of being the "giant of Africa" and Africa's leading economy, many of her citizens still live in hunger.

The report says out of a total 146 million underfed children in the world, 73 per cent of them live in ten African countries, including Nigeria. On continental basis, Nigeria tops the list with six million such children.

It is ironic that Nigeria's great agricultural potentials and her oil wealth cannot keep her children above hunger and malnourishment. Certainly, the country's inability to feed its citizens is the direct result of long years of misrule and corruption. At independence, Nigeria had everything going for her. Her prospect for economic growth was heightened by the presence of varied cash crops and minerals in virtually all the regions of the country. Nigeria was the world's largest exporter of groundnuts and palm produce and the third largest producer and exporter of cocoa. Suddenly, all of these were jettisoned in the 1970s in favour of a self-destructive dependence on crude oil.

Nigerian Girls Scattered Abroad As Sex Slaves grin
by Channels Television . Jun 24, 2013

Funding, weak legislation and poor law enforcement are some of the issues hindering the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.

A new report by the United States Department of State revealed that while the Nigerian government has made efforts in eliminating trafficking in persons, there were a number of standards yet to be complied with.

The report says “In 2012, a total number of 60 girls aged 16-25 were rescued from slave masters in Ghana and Ivory Coast. While in 2011, 104 Nigerian girls used as sex slaves were evacuated from Mali where they were paid as little as 500 CFAs, that’s N150 for sex”.

In the just released 2013 US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report, Nigeria remained in tier 2 status because the “government of Nigeria does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking”.

Channels Television correspondent, Doris Okenwa examines the trend of trafficking of young ladies as sex slaves.

Ghanaian women scattered in middle east countries as prostitutes

The United States government says Ghanaian women are being forced into prostitution and forced labour in foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East.

According to the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2013, Ghanaian women migrating to the Middle East to work are forced into prostitution upon their arrival.

The report attributed the phenomenon to the, emergence of fraudulent recruitment agencies that advertised locally for jobs abroad, generally in the domestic service and retail sectors.

“Ghanaian women and children are recruited and transported to Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, South Africa, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States for forced labour and prostitution,” it said.

The report also revealed that women and girls voluntarily migrating from China, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Benin are subjected to commercial sexual exploitation after arriving in Ghana.

It noted that citizens from other West African countries are subjected to forced labour in Ghana in agriculture or domestic service.

“Ghana is a country of origin, transit, and destination for men, women, and children subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking,” it stated.

The report said the trafficking of Ghanaians, particularly children, within the country is more prevalent than the transnational trafficking of foreign migrants.

“Ghanaian boys and girls are subjected to conditions’ of forced labour within the country in fishing, domestic service, street hawking, begging, portering, artisanal gold mining, and agriculture. Ghanaian girls, and to a lesser extent boys, are subjected to prostitution within Ghana,” it added.

According to the report, child prostitution, and possibly child sex tourism, is prevalent in the Volta Region and is growing in the oil-producing Western Region.

The report said during the reporting period, the government initiated 75 trafficking investigations and secured three convictions and this demonstrates a significant decrease from the previous reporting period, when the government initiated 91 investigations and convicted 29 traffickers.

It noted that all three offenders were convicted for sex trafficking offenses; two received five-year prison sentences and one received a seven-year sentence.

The report indicted the Government of Ghana of not fully complying with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so.

The government also drafted a new five-year national action plan and continued to conduct information and education campaigns throughout the country.

At the close of the reporting period, two prosecutions and 42 investigations remained pending.

In October 2012, the Government of Ghana collaborated with the Government of Burkina Faso in an INTERPOL-led operation, which resulted in the rescue of 387 child trafficking victims from various West African nations subjected to forced labour in gold mines and cotton fields in Burkina Faso; the Ghanaian Police sent 16 officers to participate in the operation and assisted in 30 arrests.

During November and December 2012, the government began an operation against sex trafficking in close co-operation with the Government of Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP); as a result of this operation, authorities rescued 82 Nigerian and 41 Ghanaian victims and apprehended 10 Nigerian and six Ghanaian suspected trafficking of-fenders.

As a result of these investigative efforts, five prosecutions were completed during the reporting period; one additional case is pending.

The report recommended to government to increase efforts to investigate and prosecute trafficking offenses, convict and punish trafficking offenders to ensure that the police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) discharges its duties effectively.

Confusion in Ekiti town as goat delivers human-like baby goat [PHOTO]

The sleepy town of Ogotu-Ekiti in Ekiti SouthWest Local Government Area was on Tuesday thrown into confusion when information filtered that a goat had delivered a human-like baby goat. grin grin grin
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident, which occurred in Lori Oke settlement, a village that is about 10 kilometres from Ogotun town, drew the attention of hundreds of residents and travellers.
The spokesman of the community, Sunday Ogunmeji, who spoke with NAN correspondent on behalf of the Baale (community head), Ganiyu Adetoun, said a pastor, Mr Daniel Odedele, helped to deliver the goat of the baby.
“After watching the goat labour for several hours, the pastor took pity on it and courageously pulled the baby out, only for it to turn out to be human-like.
“The `baby’ had all the features of a human being such as human face, head, hair, female genitals, two legs and two arms with hoofs.
“However, the human-like baby died at about noon as a result of lack of care as the crowd merely trooped there to watch rather than to attempt to save its life,’’ Ogunmeji said.
A resident, Mr Saidi Oladepo, who is a commercial motorcycle (Okada) operator, told NAN that immediately the goat delivered the `human-like baby’, it took to its heels.
He said that as soon as members of the community got wind of the incident, they ran helter-skelter in apparent confusion.
He said alarm was raised and the local security agents, referred to as `Peace Corps’, were alerted to the incident.
Oladepo added that it took more than two hours to re-capture the goat in the bush.
The traditional ruler of Ogotun-Ekiti, Oba Samuel Oyebode, could not be reached for comment as he was said to be in a meeting of the Traditional Council. (NAN)

Mahama begs EU to release funds to Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the European Union (EU) to resume the disbursement of multi-donor budget support to Ghana.

He made the appeal when the new head of EU delegation William Hanna, presented his letter of credence to him at the Flagstaff House.

In 2013, Ghana received close to 16 million Euros from the European Union.

This included a 10 million Euro Sector Budget Support for the Ministry of Health, and over five Million Euros for General Budget Support under Ghana’s Multi-Donor Budget Support framework.

But the EU for some time now has held on to the funds.

It is unclear why the EU is holding on to the funds, but President Mahama said he is optimistic the challenges that led to the freeze would be addressed soon.

A Meal From A Dustbin In Lagos grin grin
Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye

It was a very beautiful evening in Lagos. I had parked the car in front of my wife’s office, and was inside the car waiting for her to get her bag from her office so we could go home together.

And then, I saw the man as he passed, looking very hungry, haggard and harassed. It was quite clear that he was not mad. At least, not yet. What was easy to notice was that he was greatly traumatized by the impossible conditions under which he struggled each day to exist in this impossible place called Nigeria, a country so richly endowed, but where life for the majority has become hellish.

grin

Victim Of Corruption And Failed Leadership

Recent studies have shown that due to boundless plundering of the public treasury flourishing in Nigeria, about 99% of the country’s resources are in the hands of just 1% of the population, and more than 85 per cent of Nigerians live below poverty level.

Well, suddenly, the man’s hungry eyes caught the dustbin outside the office complex, a few meters away from where my car was packed. He appeared so elated at his clearly delicious find. His face creased into an awful gesture, which he probably meant to be a smile.

Then, with a quickened pace, he made for the dustbin, and began to desperately rummage in it, among its decayed, putrid, stinking contents. He seemed afraid that someone might come out to drive him away before he was through. His diligence, meticulousness, and sense of urgency would have been very infectious were it not that were deployed on the clearly diseased contents of a refuse bin.

An idea occurred to me immediately. Nigerians ought to share this heart-rending image with me, to see one of their own reduced to such a sorry spectacle in a country that was overwhelmingly prospering from crude oil exports. Perhaps, a few would weep and think deeply about the unbearable condition that years of abysmal misrulership have reduced many Nigerians.

Yes, my camera was at the backseat, I remembered. I quickly reached for it, and with a greater part of me hidden behind the windshield, I took two shots of him while he was still busy searching and collecting some items triumphantly. Then my third shot caught him as he made to move away with his booty.

And within a few minutes, he went down the street and was gone. Perhaps, very fulfilled that for that day, he would not, like countless other impoverished Nigerians, go to bed (Did I say bed? Could he afford one?) on an empty stomach.

That man, too, is a Nigerian, with flesh and red blood running in his veins, like you and I. Like President Goodluck Jonathan, whose daily campaign expenses, as Professor Pat Utomi has told us, and which no one in the Presidency has convincingly denied, exceeds a hundred million naira daily!

Yes, that scavenger is a human being just like our distinguished Senators whose annual allowances have been put at $1,500,000 (You can convert that to naira and see what it amounts to!) Yes, the man is a human being like Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo (the man that loves to be called founder/father of Modern Nigeria – whatever that means) whose multi-million dollar farm is flourishing somewhere at Otta in Ogun State.

Indeed, our dustbin man is not less human than our State Governors, ministers and Super Special Advisers and Assistants, Local Government Chairmen, many of whom are now incredibly wealthy after just a few years of “self-less service to the nation.”

Now, if this hapless Nigerian ever heard that sometime ago, specifically under the tenure of a certain lady called Patricia Etteh, as Speaker of the House of Representatives, that a house was renovated in Abuja with the “paltry sum” of N628 million, he didn’t show it.

If he had heard that some $16 billion dollars that were sunk in the power sector only succeeded in generating uninterrupted darkness, he never betrayed. He was just content to invade the dustbins, to fill his stomach with its putrid contents, until life, his life, reaches a T-junction, where, his candle would be cruelly extinguished by the violent wind of the unspeakable callousness of Nigerian leaders.

By the way, is Mallam Umaru Dikko reading this? Then he should rejoice that his prediction had come true, for Nigerians are now feeding from dustbins. Where are our rulers and former rulers? They should rejoice because that proud scavenger out there is a living evidence that their many years of altruistic, selfless leadership in Nigeria had yielded far greater dividends than we had imagined.

That is the reality of present day Nigeria. And make no mistakes about it, there are several others like that man, who would never have anything to eat today, until they are able to find a dustbin rich enough to yield them a meal.

His condition is like that because those who are supposed to take care of him are out there in Abuja and other points of power engaging in unspeakable profligacy, with the commonwealth, from which they have carefully insulated him. While he dies slowly, and miserably – a victim of boundless greed and callousness among the ruling elite.

Indeed, everyone appears to accept this very glaring truth that any day Nigeria is able to make up its mind to end its obscene and ruinous romance with the stubborn monster called “Corruption”, this country will automatically witness the kind of prosperity no one had thought was possible in these parts.

Just imagine the amount of public funds reportedly (and un-reportedly) being stolen and squandered daily under various guises by too many public officers and their accomplices, and the great transformation that would happen to public infrastructure and the lives of the citizenry if this organized banditry can at least be reduced by fifty percent!

Can Nigeria ever drag itself out of the muddy waters? Can we ever destroy a monster we have all clearly identified and agreed constitutes our worst undoing? Let’s hope that post-May 29, 2011 will usher in some fresh air.

Hope did I say? No! What I actually mean is that Nigerians can strongly desire that change, insist on getting it and never give up until it materializes. It is quite possible, if not very easy.

Shitnigeria records over 10,000 deaths through ‘generator’ fumes grin grin

Alarmed by the increasing death of Nigerians through inhalation of fumes from electricity generating sets popularly known as generators, the President, Good Governance Initiative, GGI, Mr. Festus Mbisiogu, has called on the Federal Government to urgently take steps to halt the trend. He said at the last count no fewer than 10,000 Nigerians have over the years died from poisonous ‘generator’ fumes, especially in the years between 2008 and 2014. grin grin grin grin grin
Attributing this unfortunate situation to the massive use of generators in the country, he urged government to intensify efforts towards energy improvement.
This, he said, will ensure that lives and property are secured, adding that consistent usage of power generating machines in the country is like a time bomb waiting to explode.
Recounting the number of Nigerians who lost their lives as a result of fumes and or explosions from power generating machines within the past two decades, Mbisiogu suggested that the Nigerian government should make it a point of priority to design a progressive model to achieve uninterrupted power generation in the country.
Although, the GGI President commended the Jonathan administration for initiating the process for achieving sustainable electricity in the country, he also stated that responsible Nigerian authorities should be committed to the concerted efforts made by President Jonathan towards sustainable power generation, adding that the National Assembly, stakeholders, political parties and well-meaning Nigerians should arise and fight the terror of power failure and avoid the docile approach and weakness presented.
“President Goodluck Jonathan is the only President who succeeded in privatizing the power sector and his effort towards ensuring consistent electricity in the country should not be thwarted, either by vandals and or corrupt minded Nigerians. Fact is that uninterrupted power supply would reduce poverty, unemployment, massive foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), and improve standard of living an growth of indigenous human capital,” Mbisiogu argued.
According to him: “The poor state of power and electricity in the country, and the suffering of common Nigerians are unimaginable. On a daily basis, most homes, businesses and institutions spend a huge part of their income on generator purchase, service and maintenance. Manufacturing industries end products cost prices have increased and consumers are struggling to stay above the water.
“The story is also the same in the health sector, where many lives were lost due to the epileptic nature of electricity and power generation in the country. Everyday, we hear stories on how the country would progress if there was constant power supply and I strongly believe it’s the duty of Nigerians to make it a reality.”
Similarly, he said that 2000 factories in the country were forced to shut down between the year 2000 and 2014 as a result of unsteady power supply and high cost of running generators, adding that research statistics recently obtained by GGI showed that over 10,000 Nigerians have lost their lives as a result of fumes and explosions from generators. grin
