TO ALL NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS Dear All, Once again, I congratulate you on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan on your admission to the distance learning mode of the University of Ibadan. This message is to provide certain basic information relating to your registration as a* bona fide* student of the University of Ibadan. On registration, you are entitled to all the rights and privileges of a student in the University of Ibadan. However, you also have certain responsibilities which ultimately require that you must be of good conduct and behave in a manner that does not embarrass the University of Ibadan. In essence, you must be worthy in character and learning. It is however important to let you know that, the Centre is the arm of the University of Ibadan and the platform to all its distance learning – certificate, Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate courses. For these courses, the admission, course contents and graduation requirements and the worth of the certificates are the same as with students on the regular modes. Also, your facilitators (teachers) are the same. These courses are run on the Open Distance Learning mode which is different from Part Time study. The University of Ibadan does not run any of her programmes on Part Time basis. It is therefore pertinent for you to note that you are not on a part time course. For better understanding, it is important to provide more information on what ODL mode which is little understood is all about. What is ODL mode? It is the driving force for distance learning education and it is according to Mobolaji Ogunsanya (2011), Professor and former Director of the University of Ibadan External Studies Programme that metamorphosed into the University’s Distance Learning Centre supposed to *... run at a distance to learners in order for both the learner and the provider of this mode of education to maximally enjoy the inherent benefits derivable from distance learning. As a result, the provider can then admit hundreds of thousands of learners at a time while the learner goes through his/her study in a manner that is least disruptive of his/her work and normal life pattern.* In Nigeria, the Guidelines for Open and Distance Learning in Nigerian Universities (2009) by the National Universities Commission < http://www.nuc.edu.ng/ nucsite/File /ODL%20REVISED% 20GUIDELINES%20FOR%20NIGERIAN% 20UNIVERSITIES.pdf>, the body that took more interest in distance education after the document was categorical on what ODL is all about when it states that: *ODL means that students should not be required to attend classes or have face-to-face contact, unless there are compelling reasons to justify it such as examinations, periodic facilitation and practicum.* It should be noted that, ‘periodic facilitation’ does not include interactive session the way we have it now and it definitely excludes outright teaching. On mode of delivery, it states among others, that, *• ODL programmes shall be predicated on a pedagogy that is led by resources and not reliant on face-to-face intervention.* *• Students should be able to register to study anywhere in Nigeria or any part of the world with a common standard of service at any study centre.* *• The study centre system should offer both academic and social support. Study centres should act as the focal points of learning communities and have agreed standards of accommodation in facilities and equipment.* *• Students should be expected to be able to have access to ICT to assist their learning. For specific programmes, functional internet access would be required for all study centres.* *• Effective marking and feedback* *• Involves the use of automatically marked ICT- based Assignments to reduce work load* From the above which serves as the barometer for distance education in Nigeria, it is clear that, the distinguishing factor between ODL and non ODL modes is the fact that it largely reduces face to face contacts between the teacher who becomes a mere facilitator and the learner and its largely driven by information technology. So it allows for self paced and flexible learning. Under this mode, a student is able to stay at his preferred place of abode and have the benefit of higher education. Therefore, as a student on the ODL mode, you will be entitled to: *i. **A Tablet device which is paid for during registration. This warehouses all course materials for courses you registered for and provide the platform for all activities. You can work on the platform both on and offline.* *ii. **Two face-to-face Interactive sessions (IS), one at the beginning after Orientation and Matriculation at the University of Ibadan and another before examinations. In between the two IS, you will be required to complete your Continous Assessment. The first Interactive session is to assist you in studying the course materials while the second is for revision with your facilitators.* |

ii. Read your course materials and attempt mock/mock revision tests in your course materials iii. Take the advantage of online support by actively participating in all line activities and use the e-library for additional academic materials. iv. Ensure that you maintain an active dedicated email account to be provided by the Centre on payment of school fees. This email account and not your personal email account will be the official means of communication throughout your course. v. Try and establish contacts with your mates when you meet during the Interactive Sessions. It is a very good to do so. You can share information and even form study groups which can be online. vi. Join and be active on the various official and other platforms on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/ groups/UIDLC/), Google Plus ( https://plus.google.com/+ uidlc/)Twitter ( https://twitter.com/ unibadandlc), Whatsapp and Blogs. These are very good sources of information and academic support. *On Registration* Details on the Admission Letter, Acceptance and Registration fees and processes will be sent to you on Monday, 17 November to enable you commence these exercises on Tuesday, 18 November 2014. Your course will run on two semesters Session. However, you have to register once at beginning of the session *iii. ** Apart from the limited face-to-face interactions, you will be provided real time online assistance by our well trained Learners’ Support or Academic Advisors throughout the course. You will be contacted on your group when you register.* *iv. **Access to the virtual (Electronic library) apart from the physical library of the University which you can use at your convenience. < http://elibrary.dlc.ui.edu. ng/>* *The implication and the advantages of the above is that, apart from the need to attend the Matriculation and Orientation ceremonies at Ibadan, limited face-to-face interactive sessions, and examinations, you may live and study from any part of the world.* *What you must do* i. *I*mmediately after registration, you will need to register and pass a certificate course in Computer Proficiency and a certificate will be awarded to you. It is mandatory for all matriculated students to take and pass the examination. This is very important for you to acquire necessary IT competences to make your study simple and interesting. The Manual < http://dlc.ui.edu.ng/ computertraining> ( http://dlc.ui.edu.ng/ computertraining) for the certificate course which was part of your Entrance Examination is available online. It is important to note that, the Centre provides training in Ibadan and Lagos offices apart from your freedom to train anywhere if required. Students who think they are in good standing and do not require further training will still have to write and pass the Computer Proficiency Test in the first six months of enrolment. Details on the Computer Proficiency Test is available at ( http://dlc.ui.edu.ng/ computertraining) |

Distance learning can create problems for public school students with disabilities. There is not necessarily a way to monitor if the student gets the information presented or if they are keeping up with the material. Services such as physical therapy and occupational therapy would be next to impossible to correctly provide through distance learning for the eligible students who need them. These services require in person meetings.Having an IEP to check if the objectives required for mastery would be impossible to correctly hold in a strictly distance only format. At the person meeting is required of all the IEP participants. This is so the participants can discuss progress, ideas, and future provision. And there are legally-binding documents to sign. The participants cannot correctly sign them from a distance. |

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN DISTANCE LEARNING CENTRE COURSE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES FOR 100, 200 (DIRECT ENTRY) AND 200 (FAST TRACK) MODES OF STUDY Dear Student/Prospective Student, Your set is coming in after over two year painstaking repositioning of the DLC UI in line with the National Guidelines on Distance Education in Nigeria and to a large extent in compliance with global best practices. You would have come across many messages on what DLC UI is all about and the fact that we are not a part-time institution while our certificates has the same worth and credibility with the ones being awarded to students on the regular or conventional mode. Apart from the mode of study, you are the same with our regular students and can study from any part of the world without coming to the University of Ibadan or the Lagos Centre except for examinations and limited interactive sessions. Apart from the above, you will be the first beneficiary of a truly Open Distance Learning Management System and platform as evident in the new portal. The Tablet that you have paid for as part of your school fees will be deployed immediately after Matriculation and Orientation (starting in the last week of January and ending in the first week of February, 2015) is a device that contains all your course materials and will be used for many of your academic activities including tests and quizzes. This can be used on and offline. In addition, you will have the benefit of real time academic as against administrative and technical support real time and for 24/7 and access to E-Library from wherever you are. For this, you will after the Matriculation be allocated to the online academic advisers. So, what we offer is a flexible and self-paced learning environment without having to run from pillar to post. Registration commences on Thursday, January 8, 2015 Deadline for payment of fees is Wednesday, 28 January, 2015 Orientation/Matriculation and Interactive Sessions start on 30 January, 2015 Note that you will be able to download the course materials in courses you have registered for you to start reading before the introductory Interactive session early in February. Further information will be sent as appropriate. RESUMPTION AS A DISTANCE LEARNING STUDENT |

Dear Student, This is a quick one to ask that you await a message on the Orientation and Matriculation ceremonies. But the most important is to inform you that the original dates are being adjusted for reasons that will be communicated in the next message. Meanwhile, students who had registered should go ahead to download their course materials and start reading their own way ahead of the Interactive session that comes up after Orientation and Matriculation. It is also important to use this time to do computer training based on the Manual on the Website. We plead for your understanding while awaiting a more detailed information, guidance and an Academic Calendar. Best wishes. Bayo Okunade For DLC Management. Shortly before Orientation, registered students will be allocated to Academic/Learner Support officer for the real time online interaction after Matriculation. UPDATE ON MATRICULATION, ORIENTATION, INTERACTIVE SESSION, ETC To: Dear All, We are sorry for the disruption in the earlier arrangement due to many factors including the unpredictable political terrain. Please be assured that we will publish the Calendar on or before Thursday next week. As earlier advised, duly registered students should continue to download and read their course materials and proceed with computer training. Other prospective students are advised to complete their registration on or before Friday, 20 February. The implication of this is that all payments and registration should be concluded by that day. It is advisable that students who have challenges in paying at the bank due to public holidays or for any other reason explore other payment channels like the use of their debit cards. |
