Gurus in the house I hav dis exact car 1999 passat 4motion v6 the
problem here is dat it overheat seriously in less than 5
minutes wen u start d car I hav discussed d issue wit some
mech. Some said d gasket is burnt or heater core bt I dnt
know who to belive bcus I tink its trial and error. Note
problem wit 1st bad radiator fan and later radiator which
were replaced at diff interval and again I discovered dat d 2
hoses connected to d heater core at d dash has been block.
D has been used for abt 2yrs bought as nigerian used.
Engine is perfectlt ok no smoke no oil shortage. Tanks for ur

I highly doubt you have a bad head gasket....if that were the case, odds are that you'll see coolant in your oil and vice versa....of course, your coolant level will go down . Your exhaust will be white and quite thick as well......
For your car to over heat so quickly, there might be an obstruction in the circulation of your coolant...or maybe your pump is dead. Anyways, do you use factory made coolant or just water?

Ok, that might be a causative factor then. various parts of your cooling system might have rusted off...and blocked up one of the narrower passages.

Check your car's drive belts as well, to see if they are in top condition.

Do you hear your cooling fan come on when the cooling needle is midway?

By the way, i'd advise that you replace your thermostat and bring your fan's wiring back to default. Try to use actual coolant as well...it will help in the long term. It will be a pity to replace that v6.

The following may not solve the issues and in fact may worsen it if this was the bandaid used to mask it:

1) Install a new known good thermostat
2) Install a new known good fan switch
3) Verify that your radiator fan is switching on and off correctly
4) Drain and replace the coolant with proper type
5) Have a competent shop verify that your water pump is, well, pumping
6) Have a competent shop do a coolant system test
7) Have a competent shop analyze your exhaust

As far as I know blocking the heater core should not affect the cooling system negatively.

Guys, just as an FYI, your engine bay should be as dry as a baby fresh diaper. There should not be any oil, coolant or other fluid leaks in your engine bay, transmission or rear end (if applicable).

Close enough is for horses courses, not in any car that someone wants any figment or semblance of reliability.
