Have you heard of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)? We are corp members working as volunteer vanguards of the objectives of this agency in order to reduce disaster risk. Dubbed the Emergency Management Vanguards (EMV), we organise sensitisation programmes for the general public to make sure we have a disaster free society. By joining us, you would have update knowledge about, and experience in disaster prevention, disaster preparedness, disaster response, post-disaster recovery and disaster risk reduction. An Emergency Vanguard could
- become trained First Responder
- have a capacity for intial local response
- complement the efforts of the Local Government of posting where a Local Government Disaster Management Programme exist
- assist in spear-heading disaster management where local disaster management programme is non-existent
- lead or play a prominent role in disaster response at local level
- watch out for early warning signals on hazards before they escalate into disastrous events
- draw the attention of the appropriate authorities to the above
- advocate, create awareness, sensitize and mobilise appropriately against disasters
- act as a liaison between the local community and the government in disaster or emergency related issues for quick response.

There are much more benefits of your membership of the Vanguard. At the end of your service year the NEMA headquarters would issue you a certificate for activism in disaster reduction. This is a boost to take you places! It doesn't matter what your course of study or background, everyone is invited to contribute in the mission to ensure a disaster free society. How can one join now. I am starting NYSC next (2016) batch in a month or 2, however I would like to do my service with NEMA.
