As children, we are already being asked by grownups – “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I want to be a Policeman, I want to be a Nurse, I want to be a Lawyer, I want to be Superman and other answers are being offered in a jiffy. But as we grow old and asked the same question, it seems that it is very difficult to answer anymore.

What is your career path? Choosing a career is different from choosing a job. Majority of job hunters do not even know what careers they really want. They just need a job to have income, buy some material things and pay the bills. You won’t last on a certain job if you don’t know your career path.

So choosing a career is a vital decision for every one of us. You must be very careful while choosing a career because once you have chosen a career, it is very difficult to backtrack or take a u-turn.

As early as possible, sit down and write in a piece of paper what you want to happen in your life. Do some soul searching and know what really drives you. In the piece of paper right down your interests, your values, your skills and personality preferences, know your passion and strengths. You need to have a well informed road map on your chosen career path. If you believe in your soul that teaching children is a vocation that fuels you, then go teaching. Get enrolled on education courses and be a teacher. When you have a job that does not fuel your passion, you will quit and find another job. Always remember the old adage – “Know Thyself.

The money versus passion debate is a normal scenario that keeps on going in your head as a job seeker. You need to survive so it’s okay to work as a fast food chain attendant even if what you want is to be a writer. For starters, it’s normal to have this predicament, but never ever throw your dream of becoming a writer. Remember that you can still write in your leisure time and follow your bliss.

If you are still in college and still lost on what career you want in life, feel free to visit your career counseling office and talk to the counselor. There are also online services and tests that can help you assess yourself on choosing the right career path. As an adult who is still looking for his right career path, there are lots of career guidance organizations and coaches who can be of help to you. You can also attend relevant workshops such as Connect Your Values to Career Satisfaction, Identify Your Skills and Accomplishments, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and DePaul Interest Finder (DIF).

As a job seeker always consider your inner bliss, your life purpose, your right career path. Just being employed in a job that stifles you is like being a rat on a spinning wheel. You just keep on running but actually get you nowhere.
Pack up your bags and bring your map towards the attainment of your right career path!
