Why A Muslim/muslim Presidential Ticket Won't Work In Nigeria by Segunbills(m): 12:27pm On Oct 28, 2014
When the British left Nigeria, it was obvious they had not properly prepared us for the challenges a nation would face in terms of leadership. From one rule of dictatorship to another, the hustling and urge for power loomed across the land. There was an historic event, The 1993 election was Historic because northern descent had largely dominated Nigeria politics and the man of the people the (Aare Ona Kakanfo of yorubaland Moshood Abiola) a southern Muslim was able to secure a national mandate freely and fairly remains unprecedented despite his party fielding both Muslim/Muslim candidates. Nigerians accepted both candidates, and an outright victory was recorded. It was an election of no religious line, Abiola was a philanthropist, business man, and a born leader, he was largely accepted by all across Africa and the world at large. In relation of these incident to our today Nigeria the reverse would definitely be the case as a Muslim/Muslim or a Christian/Christian Presidential ticket considering a possible pair of Gen. Buhari/Fashola ticket would be an election already won by the ruling party. Nigerians would definitely not buy such an idea no matter the good intentions or visions of such a pairing with numerous reasons, the sensitivity of the security situation in the country cannot be overlooked in such a critical decision as a striking balance must be considered in order to gain the trust of the masses. we are a nation at war with our selfs, killing one another has in no way helped in placing Nigeria better off than the election year of 1993. We have not lived as brothers and sisters but we have tolerated one another over the years clamoring for unity above our personal and regional wants. accountability and credibility are no more factors we consider before choosing our leaders as we have been blinded with the act of sentiments based on regional or religious criterias. With the nation griped with fear of security, a Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket would only give Edge to the opposition parties which would be fielding a Christian/Muslim or a Muslim/Christian. Candidates with Christians at the receiving end over recent violence The pair would be seen by the Christians who have in the past been victims of religious massacre as an act to not just islamatise the  nation but to also give the perpetrators of such evil act the  confidence of more killings on grounds of sharia and those against western education the Boko haramites. If in actual sense such a pairing would change the circumstances  of a Nigeria engulfed with corruption, social injustice, insecurity, unemployment, poverty etc, and bringing the desired change we all glamour for. Unfortunately one fundamental issue that would never let such a pair see the light of day would be on the core basis of Religious lines
