godsveryown:I don't know about local health centers or general hospitals in the villages, but no doctor in a teaching hospital, fmc or regular state hospital will abandon his duty post to attend to his private patients when they should be running clinics. 1 Like |

iflow: Its a good article referal. The last point however realistic it is also points out the lack of discipline in public services. Outpatients need queue to be attended to accordingly but the "I beta pass you or im connected pass you mentality" is a disease itself...fortunately curable, with harsh penalties. |

Lilimax: Dearie I tend to agree and disagree. Agree there you will meet specialists... Disagreed there are no trial by error.Hows does a consulting doctor attend to almost 100 patients a day, besides emergency callout on PA for urgent attention and not prescribe wrongful treatment?. There are myriad of challenges facing our healthcare proffesionals in Naija. 1 Like |

3 REASONS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER VISITING A PUBLIC HOSPITAL I was walking down the the aisle leading off to the male ward when I saw her. She was struggling with a very ill looking 7 year old on her back. She was also making a phone call. As I walked past her I overheard her say "We are in XYZ government hospital... We have spent over a 100 000 naira ( about 700 US$)...We dont have a choice...". godsveryown:That's what people always think but its not so. Doctors work overtime always and are not paid for the overtime enough. No other public servants work overtime that much and in companies, that sort of work is well rewarded. Because you just saw the consultant at the clinic by 12 doesn't mean he just came. He might have been doing other stuff like teaching medical students, seeing admitted patients in the ward, even doing an operation in the theatre and he may have just rushed to the clinic to see those of you there. The Registrars are even busier. Anytime you are waiting at the clinic, remember someone whose situation is more serious than yours is being attended to somewhere. 4 Likes |

godsveryown:No, it really doesn't work that way. If you work in a local hospital where you are the boss, yes- you can afford to leave your patients unattended, if your matron can cover your ass. If you work in a teaching hospital as a consultant with capable hands I.e senior regs and very good regs, well, they can run the clinic while you run your private gig once in a while. Most times, doctors start seeing patients late because of morning reviews, ward rounds and co. Not because they are coming from private clinics. If you are the CMO or you are the boss in a general hospital, you can try it because MOs, SMOs are on ground. But just once in a while, maybe. But if you are an MO, a Registrar, even Senior Reg and you are not available between the regular operational hours, you better have a darn good excuse because your superiors will fry you! There is so much discipline in teaching hospitals and even regular government hospitals. Ask the doctors where they work, their rank and you will understand what I'm saying. The ratio of doctors to patients coupled with bureaucracy is the major cause of the delay patients experience at government hospitals. 4 Likes |
