Some of these comments are hilarious. What are you people saying sef? It's like you guys dont understand what is going on. The game is targeting something else.

An ex-car-importer starts by importing all the fragmented parts of a single car (or in bulk).
He pays custom duty for all of that.

Then, he transports all that fragment to his assembly plant.
Another cost added.

Finally, employs the services of auto engineers to build the vehicle to specifications of various designs.
Another huge cost (without constant PHCN in place).

And you tell me the cars will be cheaper Are you kidding me?

Which sane importer will go through hell to produce a single unit of a vehicle to sell cheap?
And the policy went silent on financing.

They are malking it extremely impossible for anyone to import cars!!! And if you say you get strong head say you must do the business, the policy will make you enrich the government (through tax).
Period.
Government knows that if the Naira must gain value against the Dollar, dependence on importation must reduce drastically. (But nobody will tell you that)

E be like say na una wan employ those people for the importers abi. Lol

When this new automobile policy has created jobs and increase export opportunities, then we can all say, UHURU!.

Until then, its just another policy. How many policy has the FG come up with just to alleviate the suffering of the masses?, Many, and have those policy been implemented in its entirety? No.

So to me this is just another policy which bothers on noise making.

We should remember: "action speaks louder sthan words".

Good policy but we must watch these assemblage of complete knocked down (CKD) parts. Our experience in the very recent past should guide us. The assembly plants will purport to import parts but will end up importing complete vehicles with every and all items, even the ones we can produce here in Nigeria with little encouragement. They will just containerise everything and only come here to join with bolts and nuts (also imported). We must grow our power sector, we must bring back our steel industries and our Petrochemicals. Then we can truly have a Nigerian car. Finally, the actual manufacturers must be differentiated from the assembly plants and different levels of incentives given to both as they will play important roles in jump starting Nigeria's industrial revolution.

The question should be, what does this mean for the average consumer?

Currently, this just means substantially higher prices for cars in Nigeria...and people buying older, poorer and more unsafe cars instead.

What we want to see is locally assembled cars coming in at prices that are cheaper than the old import prices.

We may also see the issues that have plagued locally coupled generators; returned components and shoddy workmanship

Hmmm......great development!...wonderful!....more and more cars worse and worse road infrastructure! Great for the ports...more containers. ..but how are they getting to the plants?....by air?...and the cars...would they be for export?....or join in the road jam session? Those who now drive...or are driven...stop complaining and enjoy your commute....these are the good old days you would be wishing for in a few years time.

For the many young impressionable and economically unaware Nairalanders here's the truth of the matter.

The Automotive Policy like the preceding but short lived Fuel Subsidy Removal Policy is highly flawed! On paper they both make sense from an isolated economic stand point. But when you put them into practice with the unique realities of life in Nigeria then they are exposed to be badly thought out ideas.

Like the Fuel Subsidy Removal Policy the government is putting the cart before the horse and pulling the rug from underneath people's feet literally over night. With the Automotive Policy there has been no sensitisation period that includes investment in infrastructure and provision of things like power, stable steel industry, provision of venture capital for would be local entrepreneurs, or incentives programmes (like tax relief)for would be external investors.

The government has essentially enacted a law they claim will benefit the whole of Nigeria a nation of 170 Million however the real benefactors are just a handful of car manufacturers and they are expected to perform magic and meet the demands of a country bigger than every country in Europe. A law that ironically creates unemployment for thousands of Nigerians who already ply their trade in used car sales and ancillary services.

What point is medicine that kills the patient. You create business for less than 10 companies that employs hundreds and destroys 100s of small businesses that employs thousands in the name of economic policy.

The Policy would have made sense with a far longer phase in period. It would have necessitated a maturity business policy. If we had steady light, more steel plants, more open market for would be local manufactures the list goes on. It is also an anti-business policy as it removes the critical element of choice for the consumer by forcing them to buy from a handful of manufactures.

We need more opportunities in Auto Manufacturing and not Auto Import. Let our teeming unemployed youths be gainfully employed instead of some silly importation cabals.

we all want what you want, but remember life is in stages, you have to crawl first b4 u walk, n to fly u must also walk 1st else u mite crashland, after the importation we could pick up some skills which we could later perfect and put into good use in our own production,
