InesQor, your answer should be 56-8=48 why am I subtracting 8? It is because of the obvious repetition viz: look at the figure attached below. For clarity i drew only 1 triangle here is the repetition if you take line FE as the base you get triangle FED among other 7 triangles. right? Now, if you also take ED as the base, you'll also get triangle FED and the other 7. So FED occurs twice. Pick any one and discard the other. Now, do the same for others like triangles EDC, DCB, CBA, BAH, AHG, HGF and GFE, all 8 of them appears twice! INESQOR, i hope you got my explanation? @AMIGOZ & OTHERS, pls examine this critically!

@Sodgi 3 guyz went to an hotel. . .They booked a triple bedroom apartment for £30 pounds. They all contributed £10 and paid the money but the hotel assistant was instructed by his manager to give them back £5. |

Chykason, I saw your post by going to your profile https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?action=profile;u=458464;sa=showPosts I must confess I made a mistake, not in saying there are 56, but in stating the TYPE of triangle. I thought I mentioned that we are seeking equilateral triangles, I did not and I am sorry about that. The way you found YOUR own triangles, there are VERY MANY kinds of triangles, but only 56 equilateral ones. See my diagram below for clarity. For just side AB as shown, look clearly and count. . . how many triangles? there are . . . hahahahah (Amigoz please count for us) Edit: I got tired of colouring all the various possible triangles with AB as base, so I stopped colouring them. But you can see that I have not even gone to some other vertices yet and I'm counting up to ten triangles on ONE side as base

Each guyz paid £9.333pence, total for them all is £28, added to the £2 its then £30 The answer ain't different jOor! |
Re: The Mathematics Game by lalaboi(m): 4:01pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
Sodgi: Show ur working oh How them pay 9.333 pence? |
Re: The Mathematics Game by Sodgi(m): 4:06pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
£3 was returned to the three, making the total outgoing amount to be £28. Divide that by 3guys you av £9.333pence. Sharp sharp calculation! And if it ain't correct, advice me the correct answer jOor! |
Re: The Mathematics Game by InesQor(m): 4:15pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
It will take too long to count the triangles. The answer is 632, but if you doubt I will post my full calculation here (it is very long, and involves a lot of combinations): Check: 56 triangles with 3 diagonal endpoints (equilateral) + 280 triangles with 4 diagonal endpoints + 280 triangles with 5 diagonal endpoints + 16 triangles with 6 diagonal endpoints (there are also 9 false triangles of zero area: no intersections there) Sum up to get 632 triangles. |
Re: The Mathematics Game by lalaboi(m): 4:19pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
Sodgi: They contributed 10 each. . . and £1 each was returned to them. . . . nor be 9pound bdat? and the guy pocketed 2pounds |
Re: The Mathematics Game by Chykason(m): 4:31pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
@Inesqor i believe in your calculation cos i've done something like that before please, which program did you use to calculate &draw d graph? |
Re: The Mathematics Game by Sodgi(m): 4:46pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
Lala, lol, seems ur confusing urself Ooo but am kinda confused too tho!lol OK! £9 x 3 guys= 27 BTW you can't add that £2 to the £27 because the £30 is an outgoing money £3 is an incoming money Which makes the total OUTGOING money £27. The £2 d waiter pockets ain't an INCOMING money, its already in the OUTGOING money, az in its already in the £27, adding it again will be like it (£2) showing up TWICE in d calculation. Gerrit? Lol |
Re: The Mathematics Game by lalaboi(m): 4:49pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
No i dont get it. . . If they paid 10 eahc and got 1 back. . . Then they paid 9 each! The waiter pockets 2! 9* 3 + 2 = 29 Wer did the £1 go? |
Re: The Mathematics Game by Sodgi(m): 5:06pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
Lala don't be deceived wit english, pure mathematics don't lie. Its all numbers! *calculation (A) £30 = £25(booking fee) + £3(returned) + £2(waiter) Right now all the ABOVE numbers are OUTGOING. But £3 came back, so, £3 will turn to INCOMING i.e. Those guys got it back! *Calculation (B) £30 - £3 = £27 (TOTAL OUTGOING) the numbers we have left in *calculation (A) are £30 - £3(returned) = £25 + £2(waiter) i.e. +£3 turned to -£3 by crossing over to meet £30 making the value on dat side £27, same as the value on this side. But rmbr the £2(waiter) still exists in OUTGOING numbers! Dats how, so deres no missing £1. |

dont write gibberish to get the correct answer |
Re: The Mathematics Game by Sodgi(m): 5:55pm On Mar 08, 2010 |
Comot jOor! Oya lemme ask you this, Was the waiters £2 in the initial £30? If yes, then why adding it again after giving back £3? Another maths question for lalaboiy! How much each did the 3guys contribute for the waiter, had it been the £2 wasn't in the £30 initially. Add ur answer to the £9 they paid each and tell me why you'll still arrive at £30! I got u locked down. For ur info, am bookmarking ds page to follow u up, Hehehe! |

Sodgi: Yes!. . . They paid 10 each! and got £1 each back! and my question was! how much did they pay? And: £9 So if the waiter pockets £2 . , . Why is the total of how much they paid (9*3) = 27 + the amount the waiter pocketed £2 = 29. . . |

Lol, Mhen Lala you be OLODO and funny Ooo! These 3guys paid £30 They got £3 back, meaning they paid £9 each, summing to £27 The hotel has £27, the break down is as follow: The room cost £25 The waiter has £2 The 3guys shared the payment of the room & waiter which is £27 by paying £9 each. The waiters £2 is included in the £27, you don't need to add it to the £27 AGAIN! |
Re: The Mathematics Game by lalaboi(m): 6:34pm On Mar 08, 2010 |

Chykason:Thanks! Well I could have used MATLAB or Mathematica but those softwares are installed on my other computer, and I was not at home. So I drew it in Corel Draw, exported it to Adobe Photoshop for colouring and saved the image as a picture, and then used my calculator and hand to solve the combinatorics. Thanks again! |
