"Between these four schools--King's, Queen's, Umuahia, and Ibadan--we had some of the very best secondary schools in the British Empire. As a group, these schools were better endowed financially, had excellent amenities, and were staffed with first-rate teachers, custodians, instructors, cooks, and librarians. Of course today, under Nigerian control, these schools have fallen into disrepair, and are nothing like they were in their heyday."

Chinua Achebe, There was a country, page 30

Please share pictures you have of the time when Nigeria had a tradition of educational excellence, thank you. Examples below

Dennis Memorial Grammer School, Onitsha. Was established in 1925 by members of the Anglican Church missionary society in Onitsha, and according to Achebe, was a very prominent school. For 1925, it certainly looks prominent.

C.K.C Onitsha as seen in 1961. It was the Catholic response to D.M.G.S and the most prestigious educational institution in Onitsha at the time, up till today apparently.

I love nostalgic old pics of Eastern Nigeria!

CKC was once the school to beat.....not only in academics, but sport as well! Some old boys of the school are Prof Chike Obi; Dr Peter Odilli; a past King of Nembe, Justice Allagoa; and many more!

Uhmm...it still is. According to Wikipedia,as of February 2014 it was ranked the best secondary school in Nigeria. However, I looked it up and it came in at third, ahead of Kings college lagos. http://serveafrica.info/top-60-nigeria-secondary-schools-2014

Even Pita Obi and Willie Obiano.
Pat Utomi.
Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
There was this northern governors back then, its like Danjuma Goje be that shaa they attended CKC.

CKC produce great lawyers while DMGS have been best in science related fields.
All the Ezeilos that made UNTH the best back then attended the sch.

Achebe was Anglican he wanted to attend DMGS but his elder brother was already there so he moved to Umuahia.

That Oguta Road is the home to the top 5 best schools in Nigeria or Eastern Region per se, even QRC is very nice school

The whites really have a penchant for planting flowers. despite the fact that our weather is hot, they were not discouraged .
All the well flowered schools and institutions in Nigeria were present as at 1960.
Just look at the environments.
CKC has always had top ratings in Africa, with the duo of FGC Umuahia and kings of Lagos .
But most likely, dmgs probably has produced more personalities .
Onitsha is an educational as well as a commercial town

Are these schools under government management presently or the church? Asking because they seem to have lost their beauty. A walk through oguta road will confirm this

King's College, Lagos. Founded on 20 September 1909 with 10 students on its original site at Lagos Island, adjacent to Tafawa Balewa. In the picture below, it is the structure to the right.

King’s School (as it was then called) came into being by an act of British parliament on the 20th of September 1909, with Mr Lomax as its first principle

In 1914, Sir Fredrick Luguard, the Governor General of Nigeria described Kings College, Lagos in a white paper as " the leading school in the colony as well as the premier school"

^^^Oguta road is one of those roads that the state (or even local gov't) should have paid attention to; widened and beautified with ornamental trees on both sides! I bet if the British were still here up till now, Onitsha would have been beautiful, organized and the New York of West Africa!!!

Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, named after the first Nigerian vice chancellor of the university. Tafawa Balewa being the first chancellor of the university. Kenneth Onwika Dike (17 December 1917 – 26 October 1983[1]) was a Nigerian historian and the first Nigerian Vice-Chancellor of the nation's premier college, the University of Ibadan. During the Nigerian civil war, he moved to Harvard University, Boston. He was a founder of the Ibadan School that dominated the writing of the History of Nigeria until the 1970s. He is credited with "having played the leading role in creating a generation of African historians who could interpret their own history without being influenced by Eurocentric approaches.
