The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh and the Service Chiefs have been conferred with the National Honours Award of the Commander of The Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by the President and Commander- In- Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Like the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah, Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu and the Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba were all recognised for their meritorious services to the country.

The National Honours Award, an annual event, was established by the National Honours Act of 1964. It empowers the President by warrant to use the Nigerian Order of Dignity to honour deserving citizens who have contributed to the development and progress of the country in any field of human endeavour. National Honours Award is conferred on men and women of proven integrity for their hardwork, diligence, honesty and dedication to duty

In the absence of the Grand Commander of The Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) and the Grand Commander of The Order of the Niger (GCON) awards, the CDS and the Service Chiefs and a few others received the highest honours of the Land for 2014, with the conferment of the CFR. This gesture, no doubt, is a testimony of the recognition of the sacrifices, commitments and untiring efforts of the CDS and the Service Chiefs to address the security challenges confronting our nation in the recent time.
