Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi is the fearless and outspoken Islamic cleric that speaks the truth even if it would gore his brother’s ox. Just like his father, the late Sheik Abubakar Gumi who died in 1992, Sheik Gumi is a notable Islamic figure in Nigeria today that shows that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. He represents the voice of reason for Muslims tending towards or showing empathy for extremism.

His comments on social and political issues are saturated with wisdom. Though an advocate of Sharia Law in its mild form, he is highly critical of the brand of Islam practiced by Islamic insurgents in northern Nigeria known as Boko Haram. The cleric has, in recent times, asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to do all within its power to crush the Boko Haram insurgents in order that peace may reign in Nigeria.

On the political scene, and as it concerns the upcoming presidential elections in 2015, Sheik Gumi has been insistent that retired Army General and former Head of State, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari should not run for presidential office. Sheik Gumi warns that Buhari’s positioning in the presidential race will further polarize the country along religious and ethnic lines.

In a recent open letter on his Facebook page, Sheik Gumi advised Buhari to put his personal ambition behind that of the nation, noting that his candidature portends evil for the country.

“The lesson to be learnt here is that 2015 will be a defining year for Nigeria because of the attendant mayhem that will ensue on the announcement of the presidential election with Buhari losing. 2011 was a dress rehearsal as it will definitely be worse this time around. Buhari himself has promised us a bloodbath of dogs and baboons.

“Caution is the first child of wisdom so my advice is that all southerners and Christians in general should be on the guard,” he advised.

On the insurgency in the north, Sheik Gumi warned the FG to desist from granting amnesty to Boko Haram despite pleas by Nigerians in certain quarters that the government should apply the method it used in quelling the restiveness in the Niger Delta region.

Sheikh Gumi criticized Buhari’s statement that FG should stop killing Boko Haram terrorists.

It would be recalled that Gen. Buhari, in an interview, accused the Federal Government of bias, asking that it should stop the clampdown on the insurgents. Buhari recommended that the FG should dialogue with the terrorists just as it did with the militants in the Niger Delta.

“You see in the case of the Niger Delta militants, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua sent an aeroplane to bring them, he sat down with them and discussed with them, they were cajoled, and they were given money and granted amnesty. They were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north were being killed and their houses demolished,” Buhari said.

Sheik Gumi, however, warned that the consequences of dialoguing with the terrorists were dire, and that the FG should annihilate the group, noting that if Prophet Muhammed himself were alive today, he would personally have led the way in exterminating the sect.
