Prominent governorship aspirants in Abia State on the platform of the Peoples Democatic Party (PDP), including Senators Uche Chukwumerije (Abia North), Senator Nkechi Nwaogu (Abia Central), and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), have faulted the party ward congress held in the state on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, they alleged the ward congress never took place.

They contended that instead what took place was that the Tony Ceaser Okeke national congress team at 1.20 p.m. arrived the State Secretariat of the state PDP and had a meeting with aspirants, delegates, and stakeholders who expressed their fears over the plan to hijack the congresses by the State Government, and that the meeting ended at 2.15 p.m.

They also alleged that the party membership registers of all the 184 wards in Abia disappeared contrary to the guidelines for conduct of congresses.

The aspirants also pointed out that the Ceaser Okeke teams failed to produce the mandatory election materials for the congresses including collation materials, identity tags for those to supervise the elections, and party registers.

Nobody, they claimed, was deployed in the field to conduct the congress.

The protesting governorship aspirants also included Chief Eric Acho Nwakanma, Chief Uzoma Abonta, Solomon Ogunji, Reverend G. Nwambu, Emeka Atuma, and Nze Esiaga.

They stated further: “In the field where people waited, nobody came with any materials; the only activity was the Transition Committee Chairmen in every local government moving about with their security and video crew and still photographers taking pictures of the crowds anxiously waiting for the arrival of the electoral officers.

“Between 5.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. the people dispersed to their homes disappointed. From about 8 p.m. we noticed surreptitious movements of non-executive members of the party and government officials carrying pre-prepared fictitious result sheets of papers to the members of the Tony Ceaser Okeke-led panel in Damgrete Hotel where they were huddled since their arrival after the meeting with stakeholders and aspirants which as earlier noted ended at 2.15 p.m.

“Rumour has it that the panel spent most of the night compiling the fictitious results into their result sheets.

“Therefore, based on the foregoing, we emphatically stress that no congress election of any type took place in the whole of Abia.

“We insist on an election as scheduled by the constitution of the party be held as soon as possible within the time line of the 2015 electoral schedule of our great party.

“The charade that took place in Abia had absolutely no remedial features. It is a shameless caricature of democracy, a cruel stab on PDP’s legacy of internal democracy and a crude mockery of our great party’s assurance of a level playing ground.

“Finally, the gross aberration of yesterday is unprecedented in executive impunity and the ultimate in anti-democracy conspiracy and fascist fraud.”
