Jonathan’s Visit To Burkina faso Sparks Outrage by Aderostock(m): 5:08pm On Nov 06, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan’s one-day visit to Burkina Faso was severely criticised on Wednesday by Nigerians who felt it was misplaced and illogical.
The President, in company with a few other
African leaders, had gone to settle the political
crisis rocking the West African nation. But many
Nigerians kicked against the trip, arguing that
he should have put an end to the ongoing
carnage in the Northeastern states before
accepting to mediate in another country’s
domestic problem.
Although the Special Adviser on Media and
Publicity to the President, Dr. Reuben Abati,
had earlier explained that Jonathan’s mission to
Burkina Faso was imperative, having been
nominated by the Economic Community of West
African States, his words seemed to have fallen
on deaf ears.
The outrage became louder when Abati posted
on Twitter, pictures of the President’s visit and
interactive session with Burkina Faso’s interim
Head of State, Lt.-Col. Isaac Zida.
Reacting to the visit, an online commentator, Esther Akin-Martins, lambasted Jonathan for failing to set his priorities right.
Akin-Martins said it was illogical for Jonathan to meddle in the affairs of another nation instead of quenching the fire burning in his home.
“His house is burning, yet he is mediating in another country’s political turmoil. He has failed to even step his feet on Chibok but he believes that the best thing he could do at this critical time is to poke-nose in Burkina Faso’s crisis,” she said, in a statement posted on Twitter.

Also, Abuja-based Eric Mallim urged the President to stop pulling a deceptive front by acting as if all was well at home, despite the fact that things were getting worse.
Mallim challenged Jonathan on Twitter to prove to right thinking Nigerians that his decision to travel to Ouagadougou is a brilliant one.
He argued that the continued killings on daily basis in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states must not be viewed by the President as mere setbacks in the ongoing war against terrorism.
“Your house is on fire but you chose to abandon it in order to help put out the smoke in your neighbours’ house, while your children perish. Is that a brilliant move?” Mallim asked.

In his reaction, online activist, Sada Abubakar, described Jonathan’s action as insensitive, inhuman and incompetent, while urging him to remove the speck in his eyes before attempting to remove the log in someone else’s.
“Boko Haram is ravaging a whole geo-political zone in the country and our President doesn’t give a damn,” he tweeted.

But, dismissing the outbursts, the Presidency said the business of governance and international relations should not come to a halt just because of the activities of insurgents.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, argued that only 16 out of 774 local government areas were currently affected by the insurgency.
Noting that the figure, by his calculation,
amounted to only 0.02 per cent of the
country’s territorial space, Okupe asked the
President’s critics if anyone of them had
refused to eat breakfast because of the
insurgency ravaging the north east.
“Terrorists will not dictate to us how to run our
lives. Have the pretenders criticising Jonathan
not had breakfast in view of the insurgency?
Life and government activities must go on in
spite of terror. We shall remain unbowed. No
matter what, we shall win in Jesus name. Evil
will never triumph in our land,” Okupe argued
on Twitter.
Insisting that the present government was not
prepared for the insurgency, he said that
President Jonathan was trying everything within
his power to contain the menace posed by Boko
Haram.
Okupe went on to place a ‘curse’ on those he
claimed were accusing Jonathan of not showing
enough commitment to the prosecution of the
current war against terrorism in the country.
“How can you prepare for a war of this scale
before you enter government? Are you people
for real? Now all that is happening is about
crass opportunism. Sometimes it appears that
many of you defenders of the opposition suffer
from ‘cerebral arrest.’
“If you say the government is not fighting at all,
may the God of the widows and fatherless
children of our fallen heroes judge you,” he
wrote on his Twitter page.

Jonathan's outward appearance says it all, if he his intelligent why would he as the Commander In-chief leave the country when his military is running away from battle front.

Doyin Okupe , a trained medical doctor who has never practiced his profession for one day but rather prefers to be an attack dog of politicians, from Obasanjo and now to Jonathan. What should Nigerians expect from such a hack devoid of integrity.

Doyin Okuigbe is a **** . The local governments that Boko Haram controls are more than 17 but even if its only one local government, even if its only one street that Boko Haram has captured, shouldnt it be an issue of serious national concern?

Mrs Martins, where's Chibok sef? grin

By my calculation, 31%( 240 Local Governments) of our territorial space would've been lost to Boko Haram by May 2019( the time Jonathan is dreaming to end his rule).
If you say the government is not fighting at all,
may the God of the widows and fatherless
children of our fallen heroes judge you,
And may the God of the widows and fatherless kids of our fallen heroes and thousands of souls lost judge you and Jonathan up to your 14 generations, if this is all your government can do to end this crisis

It is also his responsibility to do such.

We should commend our president by working with other presidents to find solution to the problem over there.

Kudos to our president.

Honestly, sometimes you have to really question the sanity of most of this people in power in Nigeria. So as if one local government is not enough but 17 can go Boko Haram, thats no problem at all?
And he even plotted it into a percentage for God's sake. What sort of a slowpoke thinks that yielding even an inch of your territory is ok? Let alone 17 local government areas, that is bigger than most countries in Europe?
You can see the logic of them handing Bakassi people over to Cameroon without even a fight, because they reasoned there millions of others people remaining, Bakassi is only 0.001% of Nigeria, so what is the fuss of losing them? When proper leaders go to war because the life of a single citizen of theirs. Haba!!!
What is this having a breakfast analogy got to do with Jonathan making peace in Burkina Faso while losing sovereignty of parts the country he pretend to command?
While thousands of his fellow citizens are refugees in their own country? Where close to 3k prisoners has broke jail with no trace in them in the last few months alone? where 200 innocent girls were kidnapped without a trace and sold into slavery in this 21st century?

A reasonable leader would have delegated this trip to his foreign minister or his vice president, in view of a civil war going on in his own domain. But in the word of his spokesman, their normal life must go on. Never mind the no life of those they supposed to be serving who are perishing on a daily basis and desperate.

This is pure madness. If Jonathan has any atom of brain or even conscience, this idiotic Okupe's statement deserves him sacked and distance himself and his government from Okupe.
Okupe is a total disgrace to any sane society.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf shunned an African summit organized by Obama because her country was been ravaged by Ebola. That's what a caring president should do. Goodluck Jonathan went to solve another country's problem when his own house is on fire.

What a shame!

To everyone criticising him....What if he gave orders before leaving for Burkina Faso? Do you expect him to take up arms and fight the terrorists himself?

I didn't realize that God or your god is a registered Nigerian voter. The real God has no interest in man's earthly government, especially the sort that rules Nigeria. If he does, I think Jonathan will struggle to be a local councillor, because he is the epitome of ineptness.

The statement by Okupe is really sad, and I think he should be relieved of his position for that. First of all, 16 of 774 is 2% and not 0.02. 2% is a lot, that's probably over a million people

am no fan of any Nigerian politician but I dont understand the reason for the incessant backlash on the president at any move or decision. Whats wrong with the BF trip...the BH insurgency has been around since 2009 AD undecided lipsrsealed so should the president remain in the country that long all because the terror group metamorphosed into a political tool used to witchhunt the polity. His office demands his presence there...we need to set our priorities right. Our problem is us the people who can change things in a democratic setting but we are yet to understand that fact. Its election time again and many are waiting to be given peanuts to mortgage another 4 years of our lives. Even the youths who complain of unemployment are given as low as 2,ooo Naira as hire to present themselves as supporters for selfish politicians which they accept.....we all know what our problem is, there is poverty in the land of plenty. These politicians want the masses to remain poor so they can use them as tools whenever they want. If things get better, there will be no one to use for their selfish ends and they know that. The ball is in our court once again for another 4 years, what we play of it determines what the next 4 years will look like both at the state and federal level... Nigeria must be better

I don't see anything wrong with GEJ burkina faso visit. After all, when the East was burning in Biafra, the rest of the country went about their daily business. The burning of the North shouldn't stop the president and the rest of Nigeria from going about our daily businesses, while the NA moves to crush BH. It's as simple as that.
The president is not a soldier, so i don't know if you lots were expecting him to lead an army into the NORTH and conquer BH. The president already appointed Army chief, defence minister, airforce chief to do that and report to him, they can always do that via a telephone line, this is 21st century after all.
I wish Mr president safe journey on his way back to Abuja.

The president is the leader of Ecowas which Burkina Faso is a member. It's his responsibility to make sure they return to civilian rule. I see nothing wrong in that besides boko haram is a self inflicted war by the north. How can you wake up one day to start killing your siblings sponsored by your elites and expect the president to kill himself for the north east. He is the president of the whole country and leader of Ecowas. Let the elites, traditional, religious and political leaders of North East call their almajiris to order. Must we always blame the president for all our problems? Their are people closer to this insurgents than the president. With sincerity they can put an end to this mess just like GEJ and SS leaders did during militancy. Besides, why did the militants not murder their people during the Struggle? During the biafra war, more than 5 thousand Igbo youth were murdered by the north with the help of the west, now the north has been turned against themselves by the spirit of those innocent Igbo. This is payback time for the north and the president does not want to worsen the killings by odering the army to do the Odi style. If you care so much for this people, go to Mubi and fight, die a hero for me I don't give a damn, let them wipe out themselves if it will bring peace, enough of this insults to the person of the president.
