FMC Celebrates First Locally-produced Subsea Tree For Bonga Northwest by Omooba77: 6:14am On Nov 18, 2014
FMC Technologies, a leading global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry, has recorded another milestone with the inauguration of its first subsea production tree built entirely in Nigeria. The equipment, manufactured for Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo)’s Bonga Northwest project, marks the company’s first subsea equipment engineered, manufactured, tested, installed and serviced entirely in the country.Oil production from the first well at the Bonga Northwest deepwater development off the Nigerian coast began on August 5, 2014.Four oil producing wells and two water injection wells in the Bonga Northwest Phase 1 development will be connected to the Bonga Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel from where oil is loaded onto tankers for shipping around the world.FMC Technologies is providing the subsea production systems to support the development, which is led by SNEPCo.Speaking at a recent event in Lagos to celebrate this achievement, the Area Manager of FMC Technologies Africa Region Subsea, Shelagh Daley said the company had been working with SNEPCo to supply subsea systems for the Bonga Northwest development since 2010.“This local manufacturing of equipment marks a significant milestone for the company and for the country’s energy industry. FMC Technologies is contributing to the development of the Nigerian economy not only in terms of harnessing and utilising the country’s natural resources, but also by employing and developing skilled local professionals. FMC Technologies’ operations in Nigeria are responsible for more than 2,000 jobs in the country, including employees and through our supply chain,” he explained.FMC Technologies began its operations in Nigeria in 1999 and has provided equipment for a number of major subsea projects, including OKONO, Agbami, Bonga and Egina.FMC Technologies was also awarded a $1.2 billion subsea equipment order by Total Upstream Nigeria Limited and the  contract work scope covers the supply of subsea trees and wellheads, manifolds, installation tooling, flowline connection systems and associated control systems, with deliveries due to start in 2015.FMC’s Senior Vice President, Subsea Technologies, Mr.  Tore Halvorsen, said Egina, would be “the largest subsea project to date in West Africa”.FMC Technologies had expanded its facilities in Lagos and Onne to handle delivery of the equipment as part of its strategy to meet Nigerian Local Content requirements. The contract awards to Saipem and FMC Technologies came after the French operator awarded a $3bn fabrication contract for the field’s new build Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading vessel to South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries. The field is now expected to come on stream in the second half of 2017, about three years behind the original schedule. The company said first oil from the field, which is part of the Oil Mining Lease, OML 130, is expected at the end of 2017, with output at 200,000 barrels of oil a day.
