President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met behind
closed-doors with the leadership of the Senate inside the
Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting held a few hours after some senators rose
against the President’s decision to extend the emergency
rule declared in three North Eastern states of Adamawa,
Borno and Yobe over the activities of the Boko Haram sect.
The decision to extend the emergency rule, which was taken
during the National Defence Council meeting on Monday,
was communicated to the National Assembly on Tuesday.
There were reports of disagreement among the lawmakers
on the desirability of the extension of the emergency rule in
the affected states, which have continued to witness
relentless onslaught by members of the sect.
The senators were led to the parley with the President by the President of the Senate, David Mark.
Others in the meeting included the Deputy President of the
Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-
Egba; Deputy Leader, Abdul Ningi; and the Minority Leader,
George Akume, among others.
All the senators arrived and left the Presidential Villa in a
convoy without talking to State House correspondents.
A source in the Presidency, however, said the meeting was a troubleshooting effort by the President to ensure that his
request to extend the emergency rule scaled through at the
National Assembly.
