NO fewer than 11 passengers, including a mother and her two female children, were reportedly killed in an auto crash involving a commercial bus travelling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when the bus crashed into a river.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Akwa Ibom State, Mr Ramalan Yerima, confirmed the incident in Uyo on Friday.

Yerima said that the victims were in a 18-seater bus carrying 13 passengers that belonged to a Port Harcourt-based transport company named TO AND FRO.

He stated that only two male passengers survived in the incident, which happened at 9 p.m. on Ibagwa bridge near Wellington Bassey Barracks, Abak Local Government area of Akwa Ibom.

Yerima explained that the driver had tried to dodge a pothole at the edge of the bridge when a CRV coming behind hit the bus and it skidded into the river.

The sector commander said that the corpses had since been recovered and deposited at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital morgue.

He said that rescue operation was facilitated by the support of Julius Berger Construction company that provided a crane to pull out the submerged vehicle from the river.

A sympathiser at the scene, Mr Monday Bassey, told our correspondent that he couldn’t believe his eyes when he reached the scene of the accident.
