LAGOS—Plans for tomorrow’s primaries to
produce the governorship candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, APC for Lagos State took
a twist last night after 11 of the 12 aspirants
demanded a change of the procedures to allow for
direct primaries.

The stance of the 11 aspirants was purportedly to
avoid constitutional breaches on the basis of the
fact that the 37 Local Council Development Areas,
LCDAs which are not recognised by the
constitution were included in the process leading
to the emergence of the delegates for tomorrow’s
chosen indirect primaries.

The only aspirant that did not endorse the
communiqué was Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.
With the erstwhile governor of the state and
national party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in full
control of the state party structure and with most
of the delegates who emerged from the ward
congresses loyal to him, it is expected that
whoever he, Tinubu backs would win the
nomination.

Among the 11 aspirants who called for a
modification of the process were Olasupo
Shasore, Dr Leke Pitan, Dr Femi Hamzat, Senator
Ganiyu Solomon, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Dr Tola
Kasali, Mr Tokunbo Wahab among others. Dr.
Pitan who served in the Tinubu cabinet as
commissioner for health, Vanguard learned, is
being backed by former commissioners in the
Tinubu cabinet.

The group of 11 aspirants called for the
postponement of the primaries on the fear that
the use of delegates who emerged from the 37
local council development areas could violate the
provisions of the electoral act given that the
LCDAs are not recognised by the constitution.
The eleven thus called on the party leadership to
either postpone the primaries to find a way of
navigating the hurdle or to use the direct
primaries, in which case all party members would
be allowed to vote in the primary. The eleven
aspirants also called for a meeting with the party
leadership to hold last night. As at press time it
could not be confirmed if the party had given
heed to their request.

The Ambode camp was dismissive of the threat
from the other 11 aspirants last night as it
alleged a conspiracy on the claim that a very
senior official in the Fashola government had
made the same arguments at a meeting of the
aspirants with party officials at a meeting
penultimate Monday.

In the letter dated December 1, 2014 addressed to
the national chairman of the party, Chief John
Odigie-Oyegun and copied to Tinubu and other
senior party officials, the 11 aspirants said:

Following the screening completion exercise of
1st December 2014 the aspirants for Governor of
Lagos State in the forthcoming 2015 elections
agreed to convene a meeting to discuss matters
of mutual concern.

We now write to bring to your attention matters
considered and agreed to at this meeting.

All this aspirants are very lazy.
They sat down reading newspapers and not meeting with APC Delegates expecting to win primary elections.
They should know that elections are not won on newspaper pages, is it now when the primaries are now two days away that they noticed they have not met all the ward delegates....

The source said the governor “has been supporting Shasore’s governorship aspiration. Shasore has been Fashola’s original candidate from the beginning. But his aspiration has violated the party’s zoning rule, which has been in force since 1999. The same rule was applied in 2007″.
