A collection of about 100 brains, all preserved in jars, has vanished without trace from the university. One of the missing brains is believed to have belonged to clock tower sniper Charles Whitman. Whitman's 1966 rampage at the University of Texas killed 16 people, including his mother and wife. The brains were being kept in the Animal Resources Centre in a basement at the University of Texas. They had come from Austin State Hospital - formerly known as the State Lunatic Asylum - around 28 years ago.
