At least one gunman is holding up to 40 people hostage in a cafe in Sydney, Australia. Five people, two women and three men were seen escaping from the Lindt cafe in Martin's Place. Two of the hostages who escaped said the gunman claimed to have four bombs, two inside the cafe itself. The man was believed to be a Muslim extremist, armed with a shot gun, machete and suspected bomb. Hostages had been seen being forced to hold up a black Islamic flag against the cafe window. The hostages had been held captive since 9.45am Australia time, when the armed man walked into the cafe. Armed police sealed off streets around the cafe and Martin Place station is shut, as officers operated according to their counter terrorism protocols. The incident began just hours after a 25-year-old suspect was arrested in a terror raid in Sydney. Australia's Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, described the attack as "terrifying" and said it could be politically motivated.
