The color of the smoke out of the tailpipe tells you a lot of the problem, so dark black is usually a sign of excessive gasoline not being burned, blue is a good sign that oil is being burned inside the motor and white is usually a sign of coolant being burned.

The white "smoke" is actually steam from the anti-freeze / water mixture being burned and turned to steam.

Is the cooling system always getting low on coolant? Engine overheating? Then odds are it is burning coolant and this steam cleaning of the cylinders is harming the engine by cleaning the oil off the cylinder walls where it is needed to lubricate the pistons.

Is the smoke only at start up? Or all the time? If it is light blue and only at start up then it might be oil being burned, maybe past the valve stems seals. If the oil level is always getting low, then oil burning might be the problem.

But if a lot of white smoke is always coming out the tailpipe and the engine is using coolant and overheating, then I would have the engine problem checked out by a professional shop, continued driving in this condition will ruin the engine in a short time, if it is not already damaged.
