More than six months after the election that
produced Governor Ayo Fayose, the bickering
between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti
State has continued unabated.
Both parties on Monday exchanged brickbats
over the controversial stomach infrastructure
programme of Fayose, with the APC
demanding that the governor, who had started
distributing rice and chickens to thousands of
Ekiti people to celebrate the Christmas and
New Year festivities, should stop treating Ekiti
people like beggars, accusing the governor of
promoting beggary among the populace.
APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary,
Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, berated Fayose for
not fulfilling his electoral promises to Ekiti
people, saying his stomach infrastructure
slogan was a ploy to treat the electorate like
beggars.
The party said the governor has turned Ekiti
people to beggars by giving them handouts in
the form of “kwashiorkor-infested chickens not
bigger in size than ailing pigeons”, adding that
Ekiti people “have now seen the deceit of a
man who says he is a friend of the common
man with his callous attitude to the people he
claims to love during the period the people
are supposed to be happy”.
The APC spokesman accused the governor of
reducing the status of Ekiti citizens by offering
them peanuts stating: “Governor Fayose gave
two ‘congos’ of rice and miserable palm oil not
up to one litre all totalling N700 to each
worker from whom the governor had earlier
deducted N2,000 from his/her salary in lieu of
the Christmas gift.
“This is in contrast to former Governor Kayode
Fayemi, who empowered the people through
agriculture, cooperatives and employment and
apprenticeship schemes involving over 2,000
youths, which helped the people to earn a
living and made them happy for four years as
against Fayose’s tokenism as Christmas gifts.”
Olatunbosun said instead of Fayose building on
these laudable schemes, he has cancelled all
the programmes, rendering the youths
jobless, while also cancelling many promotions
in the civil service as well dismissing many
workers for the offences they did not commit.
“Fayemi last year paid civil servants 30 per
cent of their salary as Christmas bonus. He
also paid their leave bonus, while their
December salary was paid on December 18. In
contrast, Fayose has refused to pay civil
servants their September salary even though
he has collected the September allocation
from the Federation Account.
“Civil servants are yet to be paid as at
December 22. Last year, apart from the 30
per cent and leave bonuses, all offices in the
MDAS were given gifts but all these have gone
under Fayose, as workers are now praying for
their September salaries let alone December
salaries or Christmas or leave bonus,” he
charged.
The APC spokesman said Fayose has worsened
the condition of Ekiti workers by making it
plain that he has no money to pay December
salaries, alleging that the state government
had received December allocation (which is
always shared by the Federation Account
Allocation Committee and paid in January) and
describing the governor’s action as “callous and
insensitive”.
“Governor Fayose should ask Ekiti citizens how
Fayemi added value to their lives
for four years. He didn’t wait till Christmas
period to pay N10,000 to over 20,000 youths
in volunteer services for four years.
“He didn't wait till Christmas before he paid
N5,000 to 20,000 elderly people in his social
security scheme for four years, in addition to
feeding them with both cooked and raw food
all year round,” APC said.
But in a swift riposte signed by the PDP State
Secretary, Dr. Tope Aluko, the ruling party
took on the APC for copying Fayose’s concept
of stomach infrastructure, saying, “It is
hypocrisy at its peak to do what you abuse
someone else of doing.”
Aluko stated that the Fayose-led government
would never shy away from the people’s
welfare, saying the governor’s concept of
stomach infrastructure has been further
justified by its adoption by the APC national
leader and former governor of Lagos State,
Senator Bola Tinubu, who personally
distributed 2,000 bags of rice, vegetable oil,
sugar and a little cash gift to people from
various parts of Lagos on Sunday.
The PDP Secretary said: “They abuse us for
providing immediate succour for our people.
They describe stomach infrastructure as an
insult to Ekiti people. They said it does not add
value to the people, it diminishes their self-
esteem, it diminishes their sense of self-worth
and it denigrates what politics ought to be
about.
“However, their party leader in Lagos on
Sunday, adopted the same concept of stomach
infrastructure by personally sharing food items
to people.
“After condemning the concept, isn't it rather
too late that the APC people are just realising
that poverty should be addressed by providing
immediate succour because poverty is
poverty; it knows no religion and it has no
tribal mark, it affects everyone of us,” he said.
