Simply means when both parties contribute equally in a house hold, both in finances, chores, pains, sorrows and joys.

it is actually help "meet" not mate
Genesis: 2. 18. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him. Emphasis included.

She is not a "house help" but please note that both spouses are supposed to complement one another in ways that best works for them. It is a mutual thing, none is a slave of/to the other.
