A LOOK INTO NIGERIA UNDER THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY
The People’s Democratic Party was founded in 1998 following the government’s announcement that democratic elections would be held in the following year, putting an end into the 16 years of democratic rule in the country. It was founded by Alex Ekweme and Jerry Gana.
The party flagged Olusegun Obasanjo the former president of Nigeria 1999-2007, he won the election with a landslide victory haven picked the former comptroller general of custom Atiku Abubakar as his running mate, Nigerians were hopeful of a better years ahead haven suffered about four years under the then dictator Gen Sanni Abacha. Things started on a good note with Nigerians full of expectations,

the first thing we witnessed was a hike in the price of fuel, the price of fuel was #20 at the inception of the administration but Obasanjo left in 2007 with over 250% rise amounting to #75.
Telecommunication network came in with econet being the first and later joined by MTN and GLO, life was so frustrating that the amount we bought a sim of 150kb amounted to #40,000, recharging your phone with #1000 isn’t even enough to exchange pleasantries on phone with your loved ones, it was as bad as that.
In terms of our economy, we weren’t doing good neither are we doing bad, the country was so corrupt that governors loot public fund to establish themselves in the overseas, to mention a few the then governor of Bayelsa state and the governor of delta state, with a lot of Nigerians jobless and some can’t even afford three square meal in a day.
But it was still better than the military era that was what we said then and we cannot feed a lean child in a day.
In 2007 we saw the then president Musa Yar-adua of blessed memory came into power with lot of things that needed urgent attention, universities and polytechnics were on strike for more than three months only for the newly elected president then to resolve the industrial action, it was really a movement of giant stride. Coming in with a whole lot of things to do, electricity supply improved, Nigerian roads were awarded and Nigeria was doing well in the well in the area of economy.
Yar-adua was the first president to reverse a decision on the pump price of petroleum cutting the price from #75 to #65.
He immediately rehabilitated the then insurgent group named “militant” in the Niger delta with majority of them flown abroad to start a new life and carrier. What a president?
Shortly he fell ill and needed serious medical attention, the then vice president Goodluck took over as the acting president as the provision was made in the 1999 constitution so as for the office of the president not to be left void. Shortly after the illness he died and we needed our Goodluck to continue the administration, we were all happy as Nigerians, we said its our opportunity as youths to have a share of the national cake with a doctorate degree holder in zoology coming on board our joy was boundless.
The administration started on a good note and with Nigerian’s expectations very high just like when the former president came on board, we all hoped Goodluck will continue from where his predecessor stopped, but it was quite unfortunate that instead of progressing ever since we retarded. Electricity megawatt dropped, the agreements that the predecessor entered into with various trade groups that weren’t implemented, the educational standard of the country dropped but yet we Nigerians were patient to see things from another angle, we thought our president needed more time in order to get himself together and keep the wheel of success rolling.
He came back in 2011 and solicited for our votes that he needed more time, we considered him and gave him the mandate, but it was quite unfortunate that 2012 January all we saw was a drastic hike in the price of fuel pump from #75 to #140 we all shouted and occupied Nigeria then which action saw Nigeria went on more than 7 days industrial action in all sector, but our president broke 7 days silence with the promise that the removal of subsidy is a good intention aimed at helping the government get more fund to finance various projects and help in the area of industrialization and production of basic amenities, he later reversed the pump price to #97 and even three years after the removal of the subsidy we still can see any substantial evidence of the promises we received.
The SURE-P fund is not accessible, the promises to make life better for the youth now becoming an illusion, in the four years administration of our beloved president we witnessed a lot let me mention a few,
EDUCATION; University and Polytechnic lecturers went on strike for close to a year and our president couldn’t even device a way to end the agitation of the striking lecturers.
ELECTRICITY; it’s a major area Nigerians have been suffering for a long time, our president thought the best thing to do is to privatize it, it was privatized and yet electricity didn’t improve. Comparing Nigeria to developed countries we should know that we are really lagging behind in the area of power supply.
UNEMPLOYMENT; Nigerian graduates are roaming about the street without any work to do with some of them getting themselves involved in unlawful things in order to put food on their respective tables. What of the fund our president promised the youths so as for it to serve as a startup capital for entrepreneurship? It’s disappeared into the thin air.
CORRUPTION; our president made a statement “stealing is not corruption” that on the international community has brought shame and reproach to us, this administration so far has groomed national thieves, we can’t forget about Stella Oduah, Madueke and some other top government officials, Nigeria is in trouble because all this people are still in the same administration that our president is telling us to belief in.
Here is 2015, our president that promised never to run for election 2015 came in again to beg for our votes, with the state of things in the country, with the problem of insecurity, epileptic power supply, degrading education and this corrupt administration of People’s democratic Party government still want us to vote them after 16 years of unfruitfulness, that the president can tell us why he failed or why he didn’t do well still won’t change the fact that he didn’t succeed in six years. Does that mean our president will pass in 4 years?
I see no reason why we have to be fooled once again, it’s time for we youth to say no to this hardship and clamor for a change, I am not a politician neither do I have anything to do with the opposition but I think there is need for a better Nigeria and we want a better life for the common Nigeria……………………. Enough is enough, we no longer need to settle for less lets clamor for change.
