Ugochukwu Onyeocha and Adesola Akindele With the general election coming up in less than 55 days, what’s your take on General Buhari and his chances against President Jonathan at the polls? APC has no agenda and where there is
no agenda, you tend to pick on
personality. The quality of the person
and personality of Jonathan is a mile
or miles ahead of the quality of the
person of General Buhari. First and foremost, Nigeria is a 100 years old
and some people are talking of
bringing someone is who is officially
about 73 years old.
Secondly, we are in a world where
Nigeria and its leadership is in the forefront of Africa as well as
commanding the respect and attention
of the whole world and you are
talking about a general who not only
ruled for a few months, he is limited in
his administrative capacity, limited in his education and does not know
many people around the world like an
Obasanjo would do.
Furthermore, this is the age of
technology and you are bringing a
man who is technically out of tune to rule a country that is surging far
ahead. Somebody who in his previous
capacity as a military head of state
actually sacked a democratically
elected administration regardless of
what weaknesses they might have had.
A Buhari presidency would only
ridicule Nigeria before the rest of the
world. To see that a Nigeria that hopes
to lead the emerging tigers would
now be led by a man who is still looking for his certificate is
unimaginable. It is understood that
because General Buhari had millions of
followers in 2011, he is in terms of
number valuable to the APC but in
terms of quality of leadership for a country of Nigeria’s status, there is
nothing in that platform. What about his running mate? I tell you something, Prof Osibanjo, a
brilliant lawyer (he was a schoolmate
of mine in Unilag) but I tell u that to
lead Nigeria, with its myriad of
problems and challenges, you need
more than the origin of your marriage and your religious association.
His religious calling and marital
association is not enough to help him
lead Nigeria. Osibanjo is a non-starter
because the politics of governance is
not the politics of religion. If it is the association of his marriage that is
going to help him to take Nigeria to
where we are hoping for, then I can
boldly say that Osibanjo is a non-start
er. We are not playing the politics of
religion here. We might as well say that how come a member of Christ
Embassy or Winners, Anglican or
Catholic was not found worthy to be
nominated for the position?
But you see Buhari is smart. He knows
he is going to lose the presidential elections and he is going to live in the
courts and neither Atiku nor Tinubu
will not pay his legal fees. So he needs
a brilliant lawyer who would be for
free and who is going to chase his
mandate in the court for free hence the selection of Osibanjo. Sir, what’s your assessment to the increasing influence of the APC? We are talking about an APC that is
fueled and strengthened by people
who moved out of PDP and there is
nobody who moved out of APC who
was not given a ticket that he wished
for in APC. There was no rancour in APC because there was no quality in
APC prior the movement of people
from outside PDP unlike in the PDP.
There is rancour in the PDP because of
the enormous goodwill and capacity
that the party carries unlike the APC that is an individual property.
The rancour in the PDP is fueled by
faith. Faith in the sense that the
aspirant know that this is the party
that will win. They know that. So the
struggle is harder here because the faith of the aspirant in this great
knowing that once they can get
nominated, their electoral victory is
guaranteed. Also, if Nigerians go back
and read about the background of the
general and of course the recent one in which he said that the dog and the
baboon would swim in blood. It’s
scary because what they are trying to
say by touting that the dog and the
baboon would swim in blood and
Governor Amaechi saying that they would set up a parallel government is
that this party’s agenda is the dis
integration of Nigeria and that is very
worrisome.
Do you know for the past three and
half years, hardly do APC governors attend the Council of State meetings
but at the end of the month, they send
their accountant general to collect
money from federation account but
the statutory meetings where they are
members and are expected to make contributions that would aid in the
development of the country, a meeting
where they are expected to bring
varied views that would help
strengthen our democracy and
improve governance, they don’t come. And ultimately, God does not
handover to you what you do not
appreciate and respect. It is a natural
law. If you don’t value the Presidency
or respect, you don’t regard it but
rather abuse and bastardise it, God would not hand it over to you because
you can’t custody it.

The jonathan presidency has already ridiculed Nigeria in the international community. The disgrace that Nigeria was subjected to worldwide after the kidnap of chibok girls is unprecedented. Buhari may not be perfect but we are ready to risk him this time around.

It's better the world ridicules us for having an alleged illiterate president with the will power to do the right thing than a phd holder whose IQ makes us object of ridicule before the international community. Ask Amampour!
