The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Sokoto State Command, yesterday said it had seized 452 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), identity cards and birth certificates from some nationals of Niger Republic in one year.
Speaking with journalists in Sokoto yesterday, its Controller in the state, Mr. Yunusa Aliyu, disclosed that 66 out of the number were PVCs, 33 temporary voters’ cards, as well as 271 and 69 old and new national identification cards.
Other seized national documents included one local government identification card and 12 birth certificates.
Aliyu said all the documents were seized by the officers attached to the Tureta checkpoint of the Service along Sokoto -Gusau road.
The controller pointed out that the cards which were supposed to be issued to only Nigerians, were issued in the southern part of the country.
He noted that it was difficult to differentiate between the Hausa from the North and those from the neigbhouring Niger Republic.
Aliyu pledged that officers and men of the service would continue to be diligent in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The controller announced that some officers attached to the border guard unit under the command had intercepted a stolen vehicle along the Tangaza-Balle road in the state.
He said the suspected car snatchers were stopped for a routine search by the officers but they refused to stop and fled the area.
‘’The officers consequently pursued the car thieves and they later abandoned the vehicle and fled.
