In what seem to rubbish the claims by the
Department of State Security Service (DSS),
that the All Progressives Congress (APC),
planned to hack into the database of the
Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), with the intent of cloning the Permanent Voters Card for use in the 2015 general election, the commission has said it is impossible for the database of the commission to be hacked.

The DSS had following the raid on the
party’s data office in Lagos last year said, its investigations indicated that the All
Progressives Congress had plans to hack
into the database of the Independent
National Electoral Commission.
The service explained that the confessions
from the staff arrested at the APC office at
10,Bola Ajibola Street, Ikeja, and the items
retrieved from the building showed that the party had an elaborate plan to hack into the commission’s database and inflate the number of its membership.
But appearing on a breakfast TV show,
Kakaaki on Africa Independent Television
(AIT), on Friday, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the Commission, Kayode
Idowu said the database of the commiision
canot be hacked because it is not online.
He was responding to inquiries about the
commissions preparedness for the
forthcoming 2015 general election.
“Nobody can hack into INEC’s database
because it is not online. You cannot hack a
database that is not available online Idowu
said.

He added that “the Permanent Voters Card
produced by the commission cannot be
cloned.” Idowu was however quick to point that his position is not in to say whether attempts were made or not. He said the it is not the duty of the commission to determine whether attempts were made to hack into the database of the commission or not.

The APC had earlier dismissed the claims of the DSS that it planned to hack into the
database of the commission.

As an I.T person, I never ready it or saw it anywhere where you can hacking into an offline server...... Seems laughable and very unprofessional job by DSS.

First of all, i was corrected that their database could be online.

Second of all, the word "impossible" doesnt exist in IT, so its really possible to hack any database, it becomes heavily difficult depending on the security.... Difficult - not- impossible

true. any website can be hacked.

Please you cannot hack a server that is offline except you use witchcraft... The only possible way is to use a staff of INEC to collect data from thier servers handson. Marilyn Ogar was erroneous to state that there was a hack intent by the APC. She should have been advised by IT professionals on what and how to divulge such information. But then again, she seemed to be in a hurry to accuse the opposition. Please am not PARTISAN. Am just calling a spade a spade!

Madam Marylin knew that she made a fool of herself after she was explained to by the IT unit of her office how hacking is being done. Unfortunately, the goof was irreparable.

Inec data base is not on its website. They will be morons of the largest order to allow internet access to their data base. That one even I will hack.

And how are we sure the server is not on an Intranet in INEC office?

It only requires one compromised INEC staff to penetrate the in-house "Offline" network.

Dss says they were planning to hack it from lagos. Using newly rehearsed videos. This gist of intranet and bribing inec officials is maggi and pepper. Hmmm. Dss cud modify their story appropriately tho. Am sure they'll send their regards. Lol. Sheer intelligence!

DSS said there were evidence suggesting an elaborate plan to hack. D deduction may have been informed by exhibits collected at d scene. For instance, a server for a mere registartion office, a hacking tutorial video, falsification of APC membership data by registering people that appeared under age among others. These are indicators.

U don't need to be an SS operative to arrive at this conclusion.

Moreover, we must not forget that the operation was based on an intelligence report either from INEC IT unit, an aggrieved APC member or other sources.

BTW, i didnt say they were going to hack the offline database, you might need to read what i wrote; hacking a database is different from hacking a server, you can hack a DB (gain access) without hacking the server, ever heard of port forwarding? sql injections?

Nevertheless, Hacking means gaining unauthorized access- online, offline doesnt matter.

You said offline server? if a server is offline, of what use is it? or you dont know what it means to be offline? It might be in a LAN and a workstation on that LAN might have access to the internet- so that's a possibility.

in the IT world, impossibility doesn't exist. the only way to prevent your system from hacking is probably if you turn it off and maybe bury it-then stay there. lol
