Alleged political thugs January 20 attacked President Goodluck Jonathan’s convoy in Katsina State. Punch reports that the incident occurred in the course of Jonathan’s presidential campaign continuation and recalled that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidentialcandidate, Muhammadu Buhari, is from Katsina.Jonathan, together with Vice President Namadi Sambo; National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; and Katsina StateGovernor Ibrahim Shema, decided to visit late President Umoru Yar’Adua’s mother, Hajiya Dada. However as the officials were heading to their destination, the brooms-wielding youths, suspected to be APC members, chanting “Sai Buhari,” emerged. The young thugs made another move to attack the convoy when the country’s seniors were on their way back from the residence. The security were said to have fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. The youth stoned the convoy when the delegation was on their way to the Katsina Airport. It should be recalled that the beginning of the year has been marked by several dangerous incidents of pre-electoral violence. It started with the assault on the campaign buses of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in Jos, Plateau State. The APC’s office in Okrika, Rivers State, had been attacked with dynamites. After that, another incident took place in Gombe State, where the PDP’s belongings were burnt. The presidential candidates have recently signed a peace pact aimed at avoiding violence during and after the February elections. However there are fears that violence is inevitable and might escalate.Foreign media unanimously express concern over the possibility of 2011 post-electoral bloodshed repetition. |
