LAGOS, Nigeria, March 10— Sectarian violence has claimed 718 lives in the northeastern city of Jimeta, it was reported here today. Earlier in the week, the police said 535 people, including 7 policemen, had been killed in rioting started by the outlawed Maitatsine Islamic sect. Today, the authoritative newspaper The Guardian published a list of casualties obtained from the Government medical officer in the area. The list recorded 718 deaths, 80 wounded people admitted to hospitals and 527 treated as outpatients. In a day-by-day report between Feb. 27 and last Wednesday, the paper quoted the medical officer as recording 92 deaths on Feb. 27, the first day of the clashes, and 245 deaths last Monday, the worst day. Riots erupted when sect members broke out of a jail and went on a rampage through a marketplace in Jimeta, about 500 miles northeast of Lagos. Nigeria's Council of State, made up of the 19 state governors, armed forces chiefs and the country's military leader, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Buhari, have ordered an investigation of the religious uprising. The Maitatsine sect was outlawed after rioting in 1980 in Kano, the center of the Islamic faith in Nigeria. Interesting article. While this group might have been arguably easier to handle compared to the monster Boko Haram has become today, it is probably an indication of what GMB can do if he comes in. Which is precisely why the Jonathan campaign should be putting him on the spot about his plans to solve the crisis. What he intends to do differently, what efforts he has personally made so far etc. But no, Fani Kayode holds a press conference on his certificate. 1 Like |

Matthewbriggs: Thanks. You make very good points and these are the sorts of conversations we should be having. And the GEJ team should be pushing these efforts and making them trend just like you are, rather than focusing on distractions. The only point I would like to add is; Do you think the accusations by the PDP, saying APC is behind Boko Haram may have hurt any chances of APC uniting? Like you point out with the other countries, the opposition was bit accused of backing the terrorists. The terrorists were condemned for what they were. What do you think? We can discuss this civilly. |
