Polls: TAN Takes Battle To UN by UrennaNkoli(f): 5:50pm On Feb 02, 2015
A new twist was on Sunday added to the much-anticipated presidential election in the country, as a frontline group backing the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan, Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), took the battle to the United Nations (UN).
The group implored the global body to show commitment to the election to further ensure the credibility of the exercise.
The February 14 date for the presidential and National Assembly elections has been a subject of controversy in recent times.
A forth night ago, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Mohammed Dasuki (rtd), told a gathering in far away United Kingdom that there was need to postpone the date for the elections.
He had cited the inability of eligible Voters to collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards.
But the call has not gone down well with the political gladiators in the country. While some are backing the move, others believe it ould affect the fortunes of the nation’s growing democracy.
But in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon and signed by the National Coordinator and Vice-Chairman of TAN, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, the group said the cooperation of the world apex body was needed if the country must conduct a free and credible election.
Ubah reminded Moon of the commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that the outcome of the elections are free and accepted by everyone.
“We acknowledge and commend your contributions to deepening democracy, good governance and sustainable development in Africa,” Ubah states in the letter.
Reechoing some modest achievements of the current administration under President Jonathan, TAN said: “President Jonathan is a highly reputable democrat who keeps no political prisoners and protects all freedoms for all Nigerians. He signed the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) to encourage greater transparency, acceptability and open government.
“Despite the challenges of insurgency in the North-east of Nigeria, he continues to protect the freedom of speech, freedom of religion and right to free worship, freedom of association and much more. President Jonathan has shown himself to be a liberal and transformational leader.”
“President Jonathan has sustainably changed and transformed the economy of Nigeria culminating in its ranking as the no one economic and investment destination in Africa,” he further stated in the letter.
Meanwhile, as part of its humanitarian mission and corporate social responsibility in solidarity with President Jonathan, TAN has distributed humanitarian relief materials to all internally displaced peoples (IDPs) camps in different places across the North-east including Bauchi, Maiduguri, Yobe, Abuja, FCT, Adamawa, etc.
“Beneficiaries of these humanitarian relief materials were grateful for the compassion, goodwill and concerned interest which President Jonathan had demonstrated in reaching out to them. It is expected that they would be safely returned to their homes when peace is restored soon,” the group revealed.
According to Mr. Christian Udechukwu, Adviser to the National Coordinator, “TAN has visited many military hospitals and comforted our troops’ families with relief materials to show support for our soldiers, and boosting the strong morale of our heroic men and women in the armed forces and security agencies which are focused on fighting to tame the terrorists and insurgents in the North-east of Nigeria and to encourage wounded soldiers and to commiserate with families of the fallen ones to know that our nation remain most grateful for their sacrifices.”

Collection of PVCs is a two way responsibility, at the moment INEC has delivered all the 68 million PVCs to the states, so those who need them can go and collect it till sunday. INEC will not go to an individuals bedroom to deliver PVC to such an individual, each individual must take a step.
