The pro-human rights group, the Civil Liberties Organisation, has said the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan deserves commendation for advancing the frontiers of fundamental human rights in the country.
The group, which addressed the press in Lagos on Tuesday, said Jonathan should be lauded for his commitment towards the entrenchment of democratic ideals and values in the country.
In a statement by its President, Igho Akeregha and Executive Director, Ibuchukwu Ezike, the CLO said, by creating a more democratic and freer political space, Jonathan’s administration had been able to stem the tide of politically-motivated assassination of opponents as was witnessed in the recent past.
It also cited the signing into law of the Freedom of Information bill, the independence of the judiciary, observation of the 35 per cent affirmative action on women’s participation in governance and the recent National Conference as gestures which exemplified Jonathan’s commitment towards the respect for the sanctity of citizens’ fundamental human rights in the country.
It said, “It is worthy to note that the state of basic and fundamental rights have generally improved under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. The CLO also observes that there is still a long way to go in consolidating the human rights situation in Nigeria but is encouraged by the resilience of the current administration in entrenching democratic ideals and values in governance.
“In the area of political assassinations, the country has witnessed remarkable progress as there is hardly the occurence of the urgly incident. The cases of Harry Marshal, Bola Ige, Funsho Williams, Dipo Dina, Daramola in Ekiti, Dr. Ogbonnaya Uche in Imo and many others are sad reminders of the past.”
Ezike added that the CLO was not an organisation that only critises but “when the government is making progress we notice it too.”
The organisation, however, expressed concern over the spate of political violence in the build-up to the general elections in spite of the Peace Accord recently signed in Abuja.

Well, let me state that I commend the President for the signing into law of the Freedom of Information Bill. Nigerians of all works of life irrespective of political affiliation cannot take this out of the President. For Human Right Protection, I disagree.
1. Under Jonathan, the Speaker of House of Reps was stopped by the Military in early part of 2014.
2. Under Jonathan, APC Chieftains and Governors of APC States were harassed and severely intimidated by a combine team of Military and DSS before, during and after the Ekiti poll.
3. Under Jonathan, then CP Mbu Joseph Mbu went head 2 head with a State Governor like he was on a superiority contest.
4. Under Jonathan, Judges were beaten by PDP Youths in their own courts, supervised by the then Governor-elect and PDP man Ayo Fayose
5. Under Jonathan, Members of House of Representatives were bullied in their Chamber premises by the police just to prevent them from doing their legitimate duties.
6. Under Jonathan, 7 Members of Ekiti State House of Assembly plotted a coup and sacked the Speaker in a house of 26 members. This move is backed by the President and his party judging from their body language.
The list is endless.

This report is no different from an unmerited chieftaincy title.

Nigerians don't know what God gave them until they foolishly threw it away. Even the diehard supporters of Buhari know that freedom of information law is the last thing Buhari will allow in his life time.
