Plot For Postponement Of 2015 Elections Thickens As Jega Cancels Media Briefing by okiezman(m): 8:40am On Feb 05, 2015
As preparations for the general elections gather momentum, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, Wednesday cancelled the much awaited media briefing on the readiness of INEC for the big task.
It was not clear why the INEC boss cancelled the event, which was to take place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The Council of State is expected to deliberate on election matters on Thursday.

Jega was expected to clear the air on reports about the possible postponement of the elections, eventhough he has repeatedly insisted the elections would go on as scheduled.

According the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, Jega has been under intense pressure to shift the polls and his chat with the media would have laid that speculation to rest.

INEC has faced logistics challenges, one of which is the poor distribution of  Permanent Voter’s Cards.

This challenge has led INEC to extend the deadline for PVC collection to Sunday, 8 February, 2015.

The distribution of the cards to be used to vote in the 2015 general elections which will begin on 14 February was earlier scheduled to end last Saturday.

According to INEC, the extension was intended to give registered voters yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity to do so in readiness for the February 2015 general elections.

“INEC hereby calls on duly registered persons not to delay in going to collect their cards before the expiration of the new deadline.

“The Commission reaffirms its determination to make the 2015 elections free, fair, credible and peaceful; and urges all stakeholders, including voters, to spare no effort in working towards the same objective,” Kayode Idowu, INEC’s spokesman said.

Another troubling dimension to the preparations of INEC is the report that contract has just been awarded for the printing of ballot papers for the presidential election on 14 February, a time considered too short for the papers to be delivered to INEC and to be distributed nationwide.

INEC is also expected to train over 900,000 ad hoc staff for the elections.

It is better to shift the elections than disenfranchise 20m eligible voters. The emphasis should be on the non- postponement of the handover date and not on postponement of election date.

If the elections goes ahead as constituted with a northern majority pvc,PDP will simply have no options than to rig the elections and I can assure you nothing will happen.

GEJ does not mind if Nigeria disintegrate because of his greed to hang on to power.

He shall be eventually disgraced out of office.

Olodo only 45m out of 68 million PVCs has been distributed and you say elections should go ahead. What kind of elections would you have when 23 million voters are disenfranchised. It is either every one is allowed to vote or the elections would be rigged. You better chose one

You are the olodo here. INEC says 48 million cards have been collected as at Monday and that figure should be around 50 to 52 million as we speak now.

If GEJ/PDP were not scared of losing, why is it difficult to declare holidays for the exercise of PVC collection. A two day holiday will be in order if they mean well. Besides, there is nowhere in the world where 100% of the registered voters vote in any election. INEC's job is to produce the PVC's which they have done. Many people will not collect theirs, many have left the country, many have relocated within the country and so on.

If they want elections on Failbuhari14 GEJ should go ahead and give them elections. But I bet you they will get more than they bargained for. Afterall it is not conducting elections that matter but rather winning it

the postponement will still favour APC, can you imagine a state like Lagos with 6 million registered having only 2.2 million distributed and Kano with over 4 million registered having only 2.6 million distributed. I hence think the PDP is doing itself a disservice by postponing the election. see link for pvc distributed

If people are truly disenchanted will GEJ then postponing the elections will even favour Buhari as it will give more people PVCs to vote him out. Many people have gone to inec offices to pick their cards and are been told to come back next week and you want us to conduct elections under this conditions.65% PVC collection is not good enough.

I don't see why any reasonable minded person should be against the postponement when it will not in any way affect the handover date.

Whether the elections are held on Failbuhari14 or May 1st GEJ would remain president till May 2019 so Kini big deal about the postponement.

Better listen to reason now before comming back here on two weeks time to start ranting that PDP have rigged the elections

In you, I see a young adult who is yet to have a grasp of the chain effects of postponing this election. Billions have been spent, people are eager to votes and INEC is ready. Postponing gives PDP and your likes more time to find a way to manipulate the process generally. PDP will not mind frustrating Jega who has not played their game out of office. Many at stake here boy.

INEC has distributed about 80% of PVCs and that figure will surely go up to 90% within the next one week. It can never be 100% because it has never been in any part of the world.

Why is it difficult for FG to give a two day national holiday to support INEC and make people have time to get their PVC?

And having the election just a month to hand over date does not give room for post election cases at the tribunal.
