Help! How Do I Confirm I Have Not Bought A Stolen Car. by shegzee43: 3:33pm On Feb 07, 2015
Hello Friends,

I just got a Nigerian used vehicle at a very good rate. I am yet to make changes in terms of documentation. I want to know what to do so as to be sure that I haven't bought a stolen car.

Thanks.

My dear...u dnt need to be afraid...once d docs re in tight, and u no d dealer too well...but when ever u try to pay for a ride dat in d actual sense u noticed dat is cheaper...do involve d police such dat d deposition of d dealer will tell u whether u re getting it right...but in d above circumstances and yet u were called up someday for any thing as regard to d car...den u can raise d exceptions in law as to reciever of stolen property....see d criminal code for more details

Medicine after death y didn't u open this thread b4 buying. I hop u ve done change of ownership already n all d papers r in ur name. D price u bought d car can save u if it is stolen. Eg u can't buy a clean 2003 toyota highlander 500k n claim u don't kw it is stolen.

Nw d most impt thing wen buying a naija used car is ur ability to reach n provide d seller ie if kasala burst. If u kw d seller n can reach n provide him if police say ur car is stolen then u dnt ve any problem go n flex ur car.

U only worry if d seller is someone who u can't reach immediately if kasala burst.

If u r caught with a stolen car police ll treat u lik an armed robber. Go n get a police report or clearance on d car in d nearest police station immediately

Thanks very much brother, I have all the original documents. I got the said car directly from the owner, my fear is he bought it also from someone but since then he wasn't able to do a change of ownership. I have copies of all transactions intact.

Thanks again.

Since he didn't do change of ownership b4 selling d car to u, did u see any car sales agreement bw ur seller n d previous owner whose name appeared in d document as at now. U shldnt ve paid until he has done change of ownership to ur name n all documents bearing ur name. Jst go to lincencing office n start changing documents to ur name

Ok....once u hve d agreement bw d seller and original owner, keep it...is a good omen....but get ur recent agreement and do d following procedure..( Am a lawyer, so ur safety is my concern)
1. With d agreement paper bw u and d seller...go to motor licence office
2. Tell dem that u want to do change of ownership. Is around 4K
They will demand d agreement paper to make sure dat is nt a stolen good.
They will issue u with d govt certify change of ownership dat will bear ur name heneforth.
With dis...ur safe...

op,i dont think change of ownership is being processed again.the most u can do nowadays is re register the car in your name...easy-peasy.u will need to provide proof dat u bought it off someone..things changed after the introduction of the new number plates.the new plates are not transferable hence no need for change of ownership

No problem with ur input...yes..I got d new plates myself registered but the problem was dat d autoreg and vechicle particulars was still bearing d dealer's name, so...what I did was dat I made researches and also sought info via my pals at d FRSC and police force ...but be dat as it may, d main issue wasn't d fact of changing of name..u can still make use of a vechicle dat still bears d name of d previous owner for years,d material thing to do is make sure dat u have an agreement paper dat links d transaction to u and also check whether d signatures are d same . Cos my clients do have problems with dat
