The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has postponed the 2015 General elections in Nigeria by six weeks.

The new dates as announced by the Commission chairman, Professor Attahiru Neva are March 28th - Presidential and Federal House of Assembly and April 11 for Governorship and State House of Assemblies Elections.

The rescheduling of the General elections is not unassociated with the security challenges in the country, particularly in the Northeast region where the Insurgent group, Book Haram has been operations and causing terror and unrest to the nation.

Mr. Jega said the elections have to be postponed after the nation’s security agencies indicated to the commission that they were not available to support the elections planned for February 14 and 28.

The INEC chairman said security operatives agencies told INEC that they were commencing a six-week special operation against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.
