My fellow NL's please i've been wondering why nigeria is always addressed with HER in a sentence or speech .e.g nigeria got HER independence on oct. 1, 1960. |

Any item or a thing that have the tendency to increase in its numerical strength is perceived as a 'woman' in literature. Eg. Schools, Nations/States, etc. 3 Likes |

We were colonized by the british empire ruled by a woman Queen Elizabeth, moreover theres a world believe that Mother Nature Is Feminine,hence all Nations should be addressed as her since lands produce and reproduce...But it was the colonialists that first termed Niger Area(Nigeria) as an Empire of her majesty |

Is not just only Nigeria, is believe that anything/item which can multiply in numbers or reproduce should be termed "Her". The church also is an example. I guess this helps 1 Like |
