A 29-year-old man, Anthony Ogbogu, has been arrested by the police for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, Jonathan Emeh, a.k.a Bakassi, to death during a fight in the Egbeda area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the two men were neighbours living in the same compound.

Our correspondent learnt that on the fateful day, Anthony’s younger sister, Loveth, was taking her bath in the bathroom.

She was said to have blocked the passage leading to the male wing of the bathroom.

The deceased, Emeh, who equally wanted to use the bathroom, could not gain access into the male side because the entrance into the bathroom had been blocked by Loveth.

He, however, in annoyance forcefully opened the door of the bathroom which Loveth was in, leading to disagreement between the duo.

It was gathered that she later informed her elder brother, Anthony, who then had a fight the deceased.

The fight was later settled by community leaders and the two parties were said to have gone their separate ways.

It was however learnt that, Emeh, who was not satisfied with the settlement, in the evening of the same day traced Anthony to a beer parlour.

Our correspondent gathered that at the bar, the two men began another round of fight.

It was learnt that during the scuffle, Anthony picked a kitchen knife from the bar and stabbed Emeh at the back.

The deceased died at the hospital.

The case was reported to the Gowon Estate Police Station and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

Anthony was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on one count of murder.

The charge read, “That you, Anthony Ogbodu, on December 22, 2014, at about 9.40pm,at Egbeda, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Jonathan Emeh,, a.k.a.Bakassi, aged 30 years, by stabbing him with a kitchen knife on his back and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,2011”.

The defendant’s plea was not taken for the charge.

The police prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuji, applied for his remand in prison custody, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

He said, “Our application is sequel to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State.”

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Badejo Okusanya, remanded him in prison pending legal advice from the DPP, adding that the police should duplicate the case file on time.
