•‘Monguno on the verge of being liberated, terrorists moving southward’

By Senator Iroegbu in Abuja

The Nigerian military has successfully repelled the Boko Haram terrorists that invaded Gombe State in the early hours of Saturday and have since expelled them completely to Yobe State.

The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade in response to THISDAY inquiries said that normalcy has been restored and the terrorists routed from the state.

Olukolade confirmed the DHQ tweet saying: "The terrorists’ attack on Gombe has been repelled. Troops are in pursuit”.

He said that the military are in hot pursuit of the terrorists who have scattered in different directions towards Buni Yadi in Yobe state.

According to him, the terrorists move was an act of desperation to show that they can disrupt the forthcoming election following series of defeats in their major enclaves in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

Olukolade said: "Calm has returned and troops are pursuing them and have pursued them up to Buni Yadi in Yobe State. That was where some of them ran to, They have actually ran to different directions and are being pursued.

"At the moment they went to Gombe just to prove a point that they are still alive and can disrupt the elections. You can see that they were distributing leaflets".

The Defence spokesman said that combined air and ground operations are being sustained in pursuit of the terrorists to ensure they don't gain a foothold in Gombe state, and prevent them from exercising their terror in the forthcoming general elections.

In the same vein, security sources told PRNigeria that the terrorists are desperately seeking other places to set up camps as they are being pursued from their existing camps in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

The report noted that in the last few weeks, Boko Haram camps in the northern parts of the states close to the borders with neighbouring countries have been under intense pressures from Nigerian troops in cooperation with troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

It disclosed that some of the terrorists’ camps have been destroyed, and as they could no longer enter Cameroon and Niger so easily, they are moving southwards, the sources confirmed.

Carl von Clausewitz, a German theorist, opined that three elements are needed to fight a war successfully.

First, Good army: It is questionable whether Nigeria Army is good. No equipment, no apposite training and largely underpaid.

Second, Will of the people to support the war: Many theories exist about the people responsible for the attacks and their sponsors. What you hear depends on the tribal affiliation of the person you ask. Objectivity on national issues is a rare trait. Even the well educated are confused and make you wondered if it is true that "the educated people are the eye of the society"

Third, Solid government: Corruption (my bad. Mere stealing) has weakened the leaders. Shop-I-shop has been the order of the day for so long that most leaders have skeleton in their cupboard. Which in turn has made check and balances impossible. No rule of law. Justice is only for the rich and well connected. Nigerian society is like the "Animal Farm".

My hope is that Nigerians will have the balls to elect patriotic and selfless leaders like Thomas Sankara, Mandela or Tunde Idiagbon. Leaders who are able to differentiate between individualism and nationalism. I got to go.

The truth is that not all the northerners support the military and some of our military men sympathizes with boko haram but God will see Nigeria through and give our military total victory.
