In two weeks' time we'll be treated to the unveiling of the brand-new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Sony Xperia Z4. Here we compare the specifications that have leaked so far to find out what smartphonemarket leaders Samsung and Sony have in store for 2015. Also see: best smartphones 2015 and best new phones coming in 2015.
Note that neither phone has been officially unveiled, although we are reasonably confident in the veracity of leaks so far. We will also update this article with more details as they become known.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Price and UK availability

Samsung is holding an Unpacked event prior to MWC 2015 on 1 March in which it will unveil its Galaxy S6. We'll be offering a live video stream and coverage from the event, so be sure to check back for details.
The phone should go on sale by the end of that same month, and we're expecting pricing to fall in line with the S5's RRP. Android Pit says the 32GB Samsung Galaxy S6 will cost 749 Euro, which converts to £556.
That Sony will unveil the Xperia Z4 at MWC is less of a sure thing, given that it will not be holding a press event at the show (as far as we know). There have also been rumours that the launch has been pushed back to the early summer, with speculation tied to its product placement in the upcoming James Bond movie.
Sony is now thought to be launching just one flagship smartphone per year, so it may well have moved its traditional MWC March and IFA September goalposts. But the delay doesn't necessarily ring true to us - both S6 and Z4 were allegedly being shown behind closed doors at January's CES 2015 show, and if the Xperia Z4 launches in the summer it will compete not with the Galaxy S6 but with the LG G4.
Whenever the Sony Xperia Z4 does eventually go on sale in the UK, we'd be surprised if it wasn't priced in line with the S6 at around £550- to £600.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Display, design and build:

Sony's sticking with the familiar rectangular, boxy design with glass front and rear for its Xperia Z4 (now protected with Gorilla Glass 4 and nylon corners), along with IP68-certified dust- and waterproof protection. We might see some reduction in bezel sizes, however, given that Sony will be swapping the Xperia Z3's 5.2in full-HD screen for a 5.5in Quad-HD monster.
Samsung's doing the same, mind, giving both screens a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels and super-high 534ppi density. The key difference here will be the screen tech. While Samsung employs Super AMOLED, which is known for its better viewing angles, excellent contrast and good energy efficiency, but often oversaturated colours, Sony pairs an IPS panel with Triluminos and X-Reality tech. IPS tends to give a more natural image, and which you prefer is really down to your personal preference.
Samsung will be shaking things up on the design front, finally taking onboard the criticism levelled at its previous handsets. We're expecting to see a design more like that of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, with a metal chassis but still removable plastic rear.
The S6's fingerprint scanner is also getting an upgrade from that seen in the Samsung Galaxy S5, now based on touch- rather than swipe input. And it will adopt the Note 4's UV sensor, and retain the S5's heart-rate monitor. But rumours suggest we may be about to lose the waterproof protection.
Whereas the Sony Xperia Z4 is expected to come with Dual-SIM, Music and potentially Compact variants, the Galaxy S6 will likely also be available in the form of the S6 mini, S6 Active and S6 Edge. The latter is the most interesting of these, copying the Galaxy Note Edge's unique curved edge and adding a second on the other side.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Hardware and performance
Originally expected to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, overheating issues has led Samsung to come up with a plan B in the form of the 2.1GHz Exynos 7420, a 64-bit octa-core processor with four Cortex-A53 cores and four Cortext-A57s. That makes comparing the Samsung Galaxy S6 to the 2.8GHz Snapdragon 810-powered Sony Xperia Z4 tricky, although its AnTuTu score of 60,978 points suggests it is faster than anything running the 810.
The choice of chip also affects the graphics, and while the Sony packs Adreno 430 graphics the Samsung has the Mali-T760 GPU. Again, we can't accurately compare the two until we get them into our lab.
On the memory and storage front the Xperia Z4 takes the lead with 4GB of RAM against the Galaxy S6's 3GB. Both will have 32GB of storage as standard, however, with microSD card support up to 128GB.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Cameras

Sony has led the way for years now with its smartphone camera technology. In common with the Z3 we expect to find a 20.7Mp camera at the rear, plus 5Mp at the front. Samsung's catching up with the S6, though, with 20Mp at the rear and 5Mp at the front. Unfortunately, which is the best camera phone isn't something we can tell from the specs alone.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Audio

Leaked case designs suggest Samsung is adopting a frontal position for its speakers with the Galaxy S6, which is also said to come with audiophile-friendly Sennheiser earbuds. We hope that's the case, because it will have some fierce competition given Sony's support for hi-res audio, S-Force PRO Front surround speaker and S-Master digital amplifier technology.
Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Connectivity
If you're a PS4 fan then PS4 Remote Play may give Sony Xperia Z4 the edge in this category; otherwise the Samsung Galaxy S6's fingerprint scanner, heart-rate monitor, UV sensor, Download Booster and rumoured wireless charging will likely win you over.
Expect to find 4G LTE, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS and an IR blaster in the Sony Xperia Z4 and Samsung Galaxy S6.
Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Software

Both S6 and Z4 will run Android Lollipop out of the box. Samsung's phones are traditionally more bloated than are Sony's, with a number of Samsung software applications preinstalled along with the TouchWiz UI and Magazine content aggregator. That's about to change, according to rumours, with many of those apps available as downloads and TouchWiz greatly slimmed down. These changes will bring the S6's software much closer to that of the Z4, and indeed stock Android.
Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Battery life
On paper it sounds as though the Sony Xperia Z4 will offer longer battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S6. While Sony is unlikely to pack anything smaller than the 3100mAh battery fitted to its Z3, Samsung is dropping 200mAh from the S5's 2600mAh battery.
Don't assume performance will suffer, however. The Exynos chip selected by Samsung is thought to be more energy-efficient than previous examples, and TouchWiz will become less resource-hungry. Even so, Sony could win this category.

Both handsets will feature Ultra Power Saving modes (known as Stamina in the Z4), allowing you to make the last 10 percent of juice go an extra day by switching off screen colours and inessential applications.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Sony Xperia Z4 comparison: Verdict

Every year at MWC we see the same thing: Sony and Samsung both launch flagship smartphones, with the Sony technically speaking the better smartphone but the Samsung getting a more enthusiastic response. This year Samsung is really stepping up its act, catching up in some key areas traditionally dominated by Sony, including the camera, design, audio, software and core hardware. Right now the on-paper specs really are too close to make an informed judgement as to which is the better of the two, although if only one smartphone is unveiled at MWC 2015 then Samsung will be laughing all the way to the bank.
