Many writers are turning to self-publishing as a way of getting their books across to their intended audience. Self-publishing offers greater proprietary control over traditional publishing and can be rewarding. It also appears pretty easy, thanks to self-publishing platforms like CreateSpace, Lulu and KDP. Indeed, some self-published books have recorded tremendous success. It would interest you to know that the book 50 Shades of Grey was originally self-published.

However, a large number of self-published books do not sell. Most self-published authors consider writing purely as an art and not a business. It is not enough to have a great story, your final product must look polished and of high quality to compete favourably in the market. Self-publishing is both an art and a business.
