fgThe federal government has released N8 billion for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Taraba and Abia states through the National Agency for Control of AIDS/SURE-P HIV Implementation programme.

NACA director general, Prof John Idoko stated this yesterday in Jalingo at a stakeholders’ meeting during which an international partner, fhi360 which has been implementing HIV/AIDS programme in Taraba officially handed over to the state government.

He said the funds were targeted at providing Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) treatment for about 50,000 eligible adults and children as well as Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMCT) care for 10,000 pregnant women in the two states, amongst others.

Represented by Dr Emmanuel Alhassan, the DG explained that the taking over of AIDS control programme by Taraba State government with support from NACA, was to ensure active involvement of government in HIV/AIDS fight instead of leaving it to international partners alone.

He urged the Taraba State government and all relevant stakeholders that will be involved in the implementation of HIV/AIDS programme under the new arrangement to put in their best to ensure it does not fail.

Earlier, deputy country director of fhi360, Dr Robert Chiegel said it has so far provided treatments, care and supports for over 270,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS in the state. since it began its operations in Taraba over 10 years ago.

He expressed confidence that HIV implementation programme in the state would not fail following the transition from the international partner to the government.

Chairman of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS in Taraba, Johnson Abraham urged the Taraba government to as a matter of urgency release counterpart funding for HIV/AIDS control to enable its members easy assess to treatments, care and supports.

He warned that its member would not take it likely should Taraba government asks any of them to pay a ‘kobo’ before assessing ART under the new arrangement, adding access must remain free as it has been the case under fhi360.

The involvement of the private sector in improving health statistics cannot be over emphasized. Many indigent Nigerians are accessing quality health care through affordable health insurance scheme with donor funds supplementing the premium which is really a small commitment compared to the actual cost. The plan is to extend it to the whole of Nigeria.
Help this innovators of affordable, accessible and quality healthcare to continue the good work they have started by ensuring that their work gets the recognition it deserves.

The money is from world bank and its supposed to be accessed only when the Taraba government plays its part, as I understand - so called counterpart funding thingy.

BTW there's nothing incredulous about the figures.
