A total of 10 civil servants in cross river state including banks officials are being silently being investigated for allegedly defrauding the state government to the tune of N500m.

National Mirror learnt that about N500million was allegedly stolen by dubious staff under the employment of Cross River State Government.

It was gathered that some civil servants working at the office of accountant general of the state were whisked away by security operatives when the fraudulent act was were uncovered by authorities of the state.

A source told National Mirror that the dubious staff connived with some Ecobank officials and defrauded government of Cross River state where millions of naira was being withdrawn from accounts of deceased or retired and sacked civil servants of the state.

“These government workers retired from service, some died several years ago while others were sacked yet their salaries were still running, this money amounted to millions of Naira” Peter Atangba said.

Another civil servant who preferred anonymity said that the fraudulent act perpetrated by these dub ious staff had been going on in the last three to four years now.

Our investigations revealed that one of the prime suspect suspects have erected so many houses, acquired Porsche cars and changing their ward ropes up to date.

As at the time of fielding this report, it was gathered that government of Cross River state had constituted a panel that is investigating the fraud allegations.

l Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State is said to be aware of the fraud incidence and is said not to be happy with the development as it affects the finances of state government especially now that economy of the state government is said to be in a recession given the fact that the state government not able to pay workers 2months salaries with about Severn months impress being owed political appointees and several other top government functionaries.

We also gathered that the indicted staff of Eco bank are now answering questions from securities operatives for the alledged financial racketeering.

National Mirror gathered that for several years, the number of government’s workers kept on reducing with no corresponding decrease in the wage bills.

However, none of the senior officials in the Accountant General`s office was willing to make any comment concerning the issue of fraud as those accosted by to speak on the matter preferred to keep mute

It was however gathered that the head of service Mrs Theresa Ikwen had complained some time ago about the increase in the wage bill despite the fact that some persons were being retired or had died yet the wage bill kept on going haywire but authorities of the accountant general`s office paid deaf ears to the complain.

We are just too greedy. I'm sure those involved must have at some point accused the government of corruption.
