Lol. I'm sure your mum must've been doing this. Many reasons attribute to this practice. 1st, to avoid fight among siblings; 2ndly, to ensure evenly distribution of the available food among all accordingly (with most times putting age in consideration). The senior ones are given the more bigger size than the junior ones.

Let's share the memory of those old days.
I can't rememba animore. It av tayed....

Now that is a typical Nigerian environment for kids growing up in Lagos in the early 80s! lol
Although my mom would not actually sit on 'apoti' like this, but she dished our meals seperately to avoid confrontation between me and my kid brothers, and trusting me, I would pick the biggest and still 'borrow' my youngest brother's meat or fish or chicken.
And the guillible boy (now 37 year old man, lol) would let me, or else he gets the beating of his life when mom leaves for her shop..
Good old days!
It's not like this anymore with our Indomie kids...

honestly, there is nothing special here.
This is done in every family.....sharing food accordingly... putting age and perceived appetite into consideration.
The only thing I see here is the memory of open kitchen practice commonly seen with rural dwellers.
Obama wife, Mama pis, amaechi and Fayose wife all share food after cooking.
