Much like how the Gemini and Mercury programs paved the way for
the moon landing, the mars rovers have paved the way for future space
flights. Techniques such as launch, flight and landing have been perfected
after several rovers have been sent there. Surface and atmospheric
conditions have been studied quite thoroughly from the rovers NASA has

There are many reasons why mars would be a good candidate for
space colonization, such as surface composition, atmosphere and orbit.
The planet rotates giving it about a 24 hour 42 minute day similar to our
own. The year is also about 1.88 ours which is only about twice ours.
The combination of low atmosphere and gravity make it easy to land and
lift off the surface. Air braking, using air resistance to slow down a craft, is
achievable because the low air pressure will not cause too much friction.
Furthermore, launch methods for landing a ship on Mars are known from
previous launches.

Though a colony on mars is quite possible, there are many hurdles to
jump before it can be built. First, the quickest trip to Mars using the best
thrust technology still takes 6-8 months. During this time, the crew will be
bombarded by comic and gamma radiation. Furthermore, sending all
supplies on one launch is impossible, so multiply launches must be made.
The atmosphere is also too thin for humans to survive as well as the
surface is too cold. Humans must always be in a controlled environment
or they will die. Final, methods of acquiring water and energy will be
needed since the surface does not offer easy methods.

In order to Mars, first supplies will needed to be seeded on Mars. This
will allow the colonist have what they need when they land. Robotic
construction might allow living places to be made before the colonists
arrive. A ship with life supports will need to be constructed in earth orbit.

The ship will need hydroponics so that the crew can eat while they are
traveling and first arrive. Once they arrive at Mars, geothermal or even
nuclear energy could be used to power the base and hydrogen fuel cells to
produce water. Communication satellites would also need to be seeded
throughout the solar system so that communication can always be
established, even though it will take several minutes to travel.

Even though there are many hurdle for Martian colonization, it is still
possible. Robotic Mars exploration has paved the way to future missions.
We know how do alleviate some problems, while utilizing other method to
turn a difficulty into an aid. Colonization could even be successfully before
we die, which would allow us to possible be some of the first people to
travel to another planet.
