A former spokesman for four United States Ambassadors to the United Nations, Richard Grenell, has said that if former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, emerges as the next president of Nigeria in next Saturday’s elections, it would be a disaster for the entire African continent.

Grenell, who made the declaration in a piece titled: Nigeria on the brink, and which was published in the Washington Times, a US based publication, of Thursday, March 19, 2015, described Buhari as working tirelessly to enthrone Sharia law across the country, which he said would further pose a major challenge to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and the continent at large.

He said, “Western foreign policy observers pre-occupied with the rise of ISIS in the Middle East should wake up to the reality unfolding in Nigeria. Opposition candidate General Buhari wants Sharia law throughout Nigeria. In fact, he wants it everywhere.

“Is this an indication that Buhari supports violence because the end goal of the terrorist attacks throughout Nigeria and Africa is an Islamic state? It is a legitimate question that should be asked by leaders of the Obama administration.

“Boko Haram has pledged its allegiance and support to ISIS. The Northern Nigerian based Islamic terrorist group wants Sharia law throughout the country and beyond. They are also actively terrorising Chad, Niger and Cameroon with their goal of an Islamic state.

“Buhari has also spoken sympathetically about members of the terrorist group Boko Haram, has cautioned against a rush to judgement on its members and has personally been selected by the terrorist group to lead its negotiations with the Government of Nigeria.

“Buhari’s election as Nigeria’s head of state would be a disaster for Africa. It would also signal trouble for the West’s fight against ISIS and terrorism throughout the Middle East.”

According to Grenell, incumbent president and Buhari’s main rival at next Saturday’s election, Goodluck Jonathan has made commendable inroads in strangling Boko Haram to submission in recent weeks and so deserves the support of the Barack Obama led United States administration and the rest of the world.

“The Nigerian economy has been growing faster than South Africa’s. Imagine what Nigeria could do for Africa if it was also free of Boko Haram’s violence. The Obama Administration should be doing more to ensure Africa’s most populous country doesn’t slip away,” he said.

Speaking further, Grenell said that with the election in Israel over, the West must quickly turn its attention to Nigeria where the outcome of next Saturday’s presidential elections could have a profound impact on the future of Africa.

“Islamic radicals have Africa on their target list and young Nigerians are reported to be interested in ISIS’ messages. Nigeria is at a tipping point. The West, and specifically the Obama Administration, needs to wake up to the growing problem,” he said.

In October 2014 during an interview with TheCable, an online news platform, Buhari had said that he was not a religious fundamentalist or extremist as his opponents had alleged and that all those trying to hang such malicious tag on him were merely attempting to demonise and tarnish his image.

“Nigerians will always uncover impossible room for manoeuvre for politicians. In 2003, I chose Chuba Okadigbo as my running mate. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even a pastor, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

“Honestly, what do Nigerians want me to do? If they don’t believe I’m not a fundamentalist, what else can I do? The era of short-changing people in the name of religion should stop,” he had said.

This bigoted, discredited right-wing scum is not even being smart here; thus, if some desperado has paid him from the looted campaign dollars to make a last ditch effort at demonizing Buhari from abroad, the desperado should demand a full refund because he merely parroted repeated and rehashed old lie that GMB is a Muslim extremist.

Only an old, confused, intellectually lazy, hateful, scare-mongering right-wing propagandist would would fail to notice that NIGERIANS have since REJECTED this old lie about Buhari being a 'religious extremist'.

The old right-wing scare-monger should ask FFK and others who have been spewing it almost on daily basis, has it ever been effective?

It must be very frustrating for GEJ campaign team that all the smear campaign against Buhari by sponsored local and foreign elements like this bigoted Republican propagandists have failed; in spite of all these lies, the popularity of the people's general keeps souring, and the change train keeps moving, with even greater momentum. It is now only 7 days to the arrival of the change train at the Victory Station.

Fani Kayode is playing dirty politics by hiring this man

When has Buhari says he would enforce Sharia in the country...... Or the man is being selective because sharia came to be during OBJ regime..... Just like how they lied about islamize of this nation they have gone to say he will implement sharia law to govern the nation....
This shows how desperate PDP can go to discredit this man who is opposed to corruption and wants the beat for his country.

All I see here is distorted presentation of issues. This can never sway people from voting Buhari to voting Jonathan.

Can a former envoy be this dumb to believe that a president of Nigeria can implement Sharia throughout the country? It seems anyone who associates with Jonathan is bound to be influenced by his cluelessness.

This man even failed to tell us how a stunt of introducing Sharia throughout the country can be pulled off. He must think Nigerians are foolish to even take his opinion serious forgetting that the General has long crossed that hurdle.

Simply put: This man knows nothing about Nigeria. He simply googled about the country and feels insurgency is a part of us. The truth is, insurgency grew in Nigeria due to the president's weak handling of the issue and a severely corrupt government where heads of agencies would divert billions of money meant for security and public use to their private pockets, and nobody does anything about it.

I tire o my brother.
The man buhari was like (with hands folded)"serves them right for voting me out" watching innocent youth corpers murdered and set ablaze alive by his bloodthirsty supporters after the 2011 elections.

If Nigeria is a country of sensible citizens, buhari's name would have been an anathema.

God forbid a blood stained fellow ruling Nigeria. #Neveragain.

Marafukin envoy. What does he know. Even oyinbos are being brainwashed.

I would definitely have preferred someone better than Buhari, but using religion as a political tool is wrong.

I have never read that buhari made a big ceremony out of visiting Mecca or visiting any Imam or muslim leader.

Recently, he said 'religion is a private matter'. Infact, I see him stopping this government fraudulent sponsorship of religious pilgrimage s to Mecca and Jerusalem. Government has no business promoting or sponsoring religious activities. Nigeria remains a SECULAR state

And for the guy up there who said buhari was selected by boko haram because he's an extremist, dont forget the Niger Delta militants chose wole soyinka as their negotiator. Did it make him a militant? No

Buhari said that, guy.

He said that he would both within and without continue to support the full implementation of sharia throughout Nigeria. He was QUOTED as saying something like this some years ago.

Buhari also said openly like 2 years back that a fight against Boko haram was a fight against the north, and also wondered why Boko haram members were been killed by the FG authorities while the Niger Delta militants were given amnesty. He was also later chosen by BH as a negotiator, although that was neither here nor there

So all the main points the author used to make his arguments were in deed based in fantastic - in fact, based mostly on words and actions directly from Buhari himself. That cannot be faulted. Although whether his alarmist conclusions are ALL to the mark is another matter

"God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country,"

GEJ statement is 100% correct, every citizen of Nigeria are his people. From the 1yr old kid in nursery to the professor in the university, from that CEO of a multinational to that serial killer in jail, they are all Nigerians. He didn't sat he is not going to handle the situation, he said he just can't go and start killing them.

To you it is simple, Boko Haram kills people and so GEJ should send soldiers to kill them. That's not how it's done. Before you know it, the international community and agencies will be placing sanctions.
