Internally Displaced Persons From 16 Borno Councils To Vote In Maiduguri by Nobody: 1:43pm On Mar 28, 2015
Thousands of internally displaced persons
(IDPs) from at least 16 out of the 27 Local
Government Areas of Borno State are to cast
their votes today in Maiduguri, the Resident
Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state,
Mr Samuel Madaki Usman made this known at
a press conference in Maiduguri, yesterday.
Usman said despite the liberation of many
local councils by the Nigerian troops in
collaboration with regional troops from Chad,
Niger and Chad, INEC had categorized Borno’s
councils into “high risk, relatively safe and
areas that are safe enough” for elections. He
said most of the people that were forced out
of their homes would vote for their
candidates of choice while living at the IDPs
camps in Maiduguri. He said in all, there are
1,838,514 registered voters in Borno State
while the state headquarters of INEC had
received 1,763,860 permanent voters’ cards
(PVC) from Abuja and had so far distributed
1,417, 750 to prospective voters.
Usman pointed out that while only 70, 485
prospective voters have been registered by
camp administrators, many others who are
living with relatives in Maiduguri would be
allowed to go to designated polling centres to
cast their votes provided they have their
PVCs.
Our correspondent reports that all the 16
designated IDPs camps in Maiduguri are agog
yesterday as people that are living with
relatives in the town are relocating their with
a view to taking part in today’s election.
Meanwhile, thousands of politicians from
Borno State, their families and domestic
staff who relocated to Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna,
Kano and other safer locations at the height
of the Boko Haram crisis have thronged to
Maiduguri in preparations for today’s
election.
Similarly, the state government, in
collaboration with the 7 Division of the
Nigerian Army yesterday reviewed for one
day, the curfew imposed on Maiduguri from
7pm to 10am.

The Internally Displaced Persons have as much voting rights like everyone else. But in their case, politicians have enticed them with financial gains.
