Osogbo Residents Monitor Poll Results On Billboards by Adimine(m): 4:25pm On Mar 31, 2015 |
Three days after the presidential election was held, residents of Osogbo, Osun State, have taken to the streets to watch the results as they are being displayed on giant electronic billboards in certain areas of the city. As of Monday night, when the results were being declared in bits by the Independent National Electoral Commission, some residents were seen in the Okefia area of the city, hanging in groups, as they watched and analysed with keen interest, the results so far announced. An ‘okada’ rider, Olawale Odunayo, said he was excited about the initiative as it enabled him to have real-time access to the election results. “My work entails moving around town, so I don’t have time to stay glued to a radio or television and I don’t also have a smartphone, but I’ve been watching everything on the billboards in certain areas where I carry passengers to,” he said. Also, a woman, who was frying yam when our correspondent visited the area, said she was happy she could see the results live without being at home. Identified simply as Mama Bola, she said, “You can see everything clearly. We are adding the results up as they come in. This is good for us. We count ourselves lucky in this age.” Meanwhile, the city of Osogbo still remains quiet on Tuesday despite non-restriction of movement as many residents have shunned their business over fears of post-election violence and to watch the results of the presidential poll. A businessman in the state, Mr. Joseph Chidiebere, told our correspondent that he had vowed not to go out until the full results were announced. “I have been indoors since yesterday because I am also monitoring the results and adding up the numbers. Also, anything can happen after everything has been announced. I have shut my shops until I see what happens after today,” he said. Likewise, a cab driver, Olusegun Alabi, complained that he had not been enjoying much patronage since Sunday “because everybody is indoors, monitoring the results.” |
