For the past few days, the social media have been awash with news of the three boys kidnapped by their newly employed nanny. Since then, the nanny has reached out to the family for a ransom to secure the release of the kids. This is quite sad and we can only wonder what the parents must be going through.

According to a report in Punch (as carried by nairaland), the maid was hired through OLX. This not only highlights the risk involved in doing business in cyberspace, but also how OLX has been particularly lax in protecting their users from frauds. As a service providing site, OLX is seen as credible having gotten legitimacy as a platform where buyers and sellers can interact without the services of a middleman. It is this legitimacy that lulls people into a false sense of security when doing business on OLX, only to wake up to the harsh reality that the site has been overran by frauds.

As a business, OLX has the responsibility of making their site a safe place for transactions. But what have they done so far? They merely release statements warning people on how to meet up with buyers and sellers when exchanging goods and services. In my opinion, this is just irresponsible of OLX! Their passive approach to ensuring a secure site shows an indifference to the safety of their users. It is their duty to ensure that their platform is only accessed by credible people (both sellers and buyers). There should be some form of verification to ensure the legitimacy of activities being carried out on their site.

In everything, security is key. I mean, how careful can you be. If OLX continues to show this lackluster approach to securing their site, then it could indicate that maybe they are in cahoots with these fraudsters! If not, let them prove it by flushing out these deadbeats from their site. Too many Nigerians have fallen victim to them.

As for the Orekoyas, our hearts go out to them and it is our sincere hope/prayer that their children be returned to them alive and well.

Olx should be held accountable for the fate that has befallen the Orekoya's family. Their carefree and non chalant attitude towards this issue should be an eye opener to other people dealing with them..
