Yes I have a aunt who just did it in the states. But it's not as easy anymore.

You have to live in America for 5 years to become a citizen, if you live in the U.s you're automatically a permanent resident, there is no much difference between a citizen & a permanent resident, the only advantage of being a citizen is having the American passport.

You are right but there are certain things you are not privilege to as a Permanent Resident.
1. You cannot vote in an election.
2. You cannot aspire to become the President.
3. You cannot become a Police Officer.
4. I think there are certain employment that are based on your status. If you are not a citizen, you cannot get those employments.
5. If you commit certain crimes as a permanent resident, you can be deported but a citizen cannot be deported because he is a son of the soil.

PS: If you come in as a fiance(e) of an American citizen, you will get a temporary permanent resident card for 2 years. After the 2 years, you will need to file for the removal of the condition (you need to apply for removal of condition on the PR card 90 days before the 2 years lapse). Then you will get a new PR card for 10 years but you can apply for your citizenship in once your marriage is 3 years old.If you come in with a DV lottery, you will need 5 years to become a citizen. What you get is PR card from USCIS after a while you arrive in the country.

l mean to ask Justwise how long is a spouse visa for? and as much as l know, it is not possible to become a citizen in the UK in 1 year.As mentioned and as someone living in the UK, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE, however, it will take about 5 years to get ILR/PR as the case maybe then after that the British pali will most possibly be in view.......Give or take about 7 years should be OK.

Really?.....You can be living in the US for 20 yrs sef...but if you don't have "papers"/Green Card you are not a Permanent Resident. If you been living in the US for 20 yrs as a Permanent Resident ..and you commit a felony....you will serve all or part of your sentence then forwarded to Immigration for deportation. Citizens are not deported. If you are a Permanent Resident....return to your country of origin and forgot/lost your Green Card...or....spend more than 6 months ....good luck on re entering the US.
